Biography

Rory Kelly is an independent filmmaker whose work has been shown around the world. His first feature, Sleep With Me, had its world premier as an Official Selection at Cannes and its North American premier as a Gala Screening at the Toronto International Film Festival. It was distributed by United Artists and also screened at the London, Flanders, Seattle and Boston International film festivals. It stars Eric Stoltz, Meg Tilly, Parker Posey and Craig Sheffer. Harvest Moon Press published the script, which Kelly co-wrote, in 2002. Kelly’s second feature, Some Girl, which stars Juliette Lewis, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Rapaport and Jeremy Sisto, premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival where he won the DGA sponsored Best Director Award. Millennium Films distributed. In addition to Sleep With Me, Kelly’s screenwriting credits include Bridge and Tunnel, a rewrite for Michael-Finney Productions, and Dumb in Love, co-written with Parker Posey. This last script was developed for the French production company, CIBY 2000, and was later optioned by famed Broadway producer Nelle Nugent (The Elephant Man, Amadeus, Nicholas Nickleby). In addition to teaching at UCLA, Rory Kelly is a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the Film and Electronic Arts Department at California State University, Long Beach. He is also the Producer and Co-Artistic Director of CSULB’s WideScreen Film Festival. He developed an Artist-in-Residence program for this festival, which he inaugurated in 2002 with Steven Spielberg. Kelly is currently developing a digital feature, Josie Loves Jesus, and he is writing a book, Aspects of the Fiction Film. In summer 2003 he will be directing a 35mm short, Second Person Plural, for which he received a CSU Scholarly and Creative Activities Grant.
