Opera 2025: Rodrigo

Directed by James Darrah, professor and director of Opera UCLA Presented in collaboration with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, Rodrigo is an opera by George Frideric Handel that tells the gripping story of Spain’s last Visigothic king. After seizing the throne through betrayal, Rodrigo descends into tyranny, turning his back on justice and on Florinda, his former lover who bears his child. As Florinda’s brother Giuliano and the rightful heir Evanco rise in rebellion, Rodrigo must confront the cost of his ambition. Set against a backdrop of political upheaval and personal reckoning, Rodrigo explores themes of power, betrayal, and redemption through Handel’s soaring, dramatic score.
