James Bridges Theater
Location: Melnitz 1409The UCLA Department of Film, Television, and Digital Media’s main screening venue, the James Bridges Theater, is a state-of-the-art, 278-seat theater named after Academy Award nominee James Bridges.
Located on the UCLA campus near the Broad Art Complex and Murphy Sculpture Garden, it features a large lobby for receptions and supports various film and video formats, including 16mm, 35mm, 70mm, and 4K digital projection.
The theater, renovated with a cutting-edge sound system, is used for high-profile events by organizations like MGM and the UCLA Film & Television Archive, thanks to support from Jack Larson and the Bridges/Larson Foundation.
Freud Playhouse
Location: Macgowan Hall / Sculpture GardenUCLA TFT’s Freud Playhouse has been a creative hub for the UCLA TFT Department of Theater and the UCLA campus for over 50 years.
Constructed in 1962 and dedicated to founder Ralph Freud in 1969, it offers a dynamic learning and performance space for students, faculty, staff, and international theater companies. The venue has hosted renowned companies like Disney, The Wooster Group, and The Royal Court Theatre. It was also home to Francis Ford Coppola’s American Zoetrope studio, which collaborated with UCLA TFT on the experimental live cinema project, Distant Vision.
The 562-seat proscenium theater features a stage typical of a 1,500-seat venue and can accommodate a full orchestra.
Little Theater
Location: Macgowan / Sculpture GardenThe Little Theater is a 172-seat, proscenium style theater space that shows theatrical productions year round.
Studio Theater 1340
Macgowan 1340Studio Theater 1340 is a flexible, black box theater space. It can be used as a rehearsal hall or for more intimate theatrical productions. Seating in the black box is flexible with up to 81 seats on portable 3-level seating risers that can be set up in virtually any configuration.
Darren Star Screening Room
Location: Melnitz 1422The Darren Star Screening Room, located in Melnitz Hall, is a state-of-the-art 50-seat facility for film and television studies, screenings, and industry events. Opened in January 2015 through a donation from Darren Star, it features advanced projection and sound systems, including DCP/HD, Dolby 3D, Dolby Surround 7.1, and 35mm film projectors. The room also has high-definition video teleconferencing, linking it to the James Bridges Theater for various events. Designed by Clive Wilkinson and Associates, it serves as a hub for screenings, panels, and lectures.
