Study Abroad with UCLA Theater

The Department of Theater invites theater majors to consider incorporating study abroad in their time at UCLA.

Studying abroad gives UCLA Theater students the opportunity to broaden their education while experiencing new cultures and perspectives.

While abroad, students may take a variety of courses—including theater, general education, language study, and other interdisciplinary subjects—allowing them to continue making progress toward their degree while expanding their academic experience. Immersion in a different community also encourages personal and creative growth. By engaging with new cultural traditions and ways of thinking, students develop adaptability, curiosity, and cross-cultural awareness. Through study abroad, UCLA Theater students gain valuable global perspectives that enrich both their academic journey and their understanding of art, culture, and community. Living and learning in an international setting helps students better understand the social, historical, and cultural contexts that shape artistic expression around the world.

Where to Start

The International Education Office Website provides detailed information regarding the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) and UCLA Travel Study.

Where to Go

Students can explore UCEAP programs by country, region and discipline. Theater majors have completed coursework toward their major requirements through UC EAP programs including:

  • UC Center Paris
  • Trinity College
  • Free University of Berlin
  • Osaka University
  • University of Waikato
  • UC Center London

What Courses Can I Take?

Theater majors studying abroad typically take coursework that fulfills their GEs, their foreign language requirement or their non-major upper division electives. It is unusual to find hands-on theater studio courses open to exchange students at other universities.

There is not a guarantee that courses will meet the same requirement now or in the future. Please consult your advisors for academic planning and information about potential course approvals.

When Can I Study Abroad?

The departmental guidance is to undertake study abroad programs either in the summer or in the fall of your junior year.
