Edit Villarreal’s plays have been produced across the country including Yale Repertory Theater, San Jose Repertory Theater, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, San Diego Repertory Theater, A Contemporary Theater in Seattle and numerous community teatros, colleges and high schools. Her play The Language of Flowers, an urban Chicano adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, is published in “The Bard in the Borderlands: An Anthology of Shakespeare Appropriations en La Frontera”. Another play My Visits with MGM (My Grandmother Marta) is published in “Shattering the Myth: Plays by Hispanic Women”. Her essay “Behind Closed Doors: Sex, Lies and Servants”, which explores Shakespeare’s use of servants in several of his plays, is included in “Playing Shakespeare’s Villains”: Vol. 2 and “The Play’s the Thing: Selections from Shakespeare’s Characters”, Vol. 1-4. For television, Villarreal co-wrote three films for the critically acclaimed series, “Foto-Novelas” produced by Carlos Avila and PBS. Other PBS credits include “La Carpa”, co-written with Avila, which aired on American Playhouse. Born in Texas, her work focuses on the Latino experience through the lens of bilingual playmaking, comedy, surrealism, heightened poetic language, historical exploration and cultural remembrance. A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, she studied with legendary Cuban playwright Maria Irene Fornes at the Hispanic Playwrights Laboratory at INTAR THEATER in NYC.
