
Jamir Bowers
M.A. Student, Cinema and Media Studies
Jamir Bowers is a Detroit native, award-winning digital media practitioner, and academic consultant dedicated to breaking down educational barriers in higher academia through diverse and inclusive pedagogical approaches. As a filmmaker, he has created two visual albums that explore themes of African identity, access, and reclamation through a postcolonial lens. His work in Nairobi, Kenya, earned him recognition from the U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman Award.
Jamir’s research examines the spectacularization and movement of Black and Indigenous spiritual cultures within the cinematic horror genre. He also investigates the role of semiotics in shaping Black identity in digital media, analyzing how symbols and representations influence cultural narratives.
