Felipe Cervera

Felipe Cervera is Director of the Centre for Performance Studies and Assistant Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at UCLA. His book project, provisionally titled Celestial Acts: Performance and Planetary Politics, is an ethnography of space artists and examines the politics of doing space art and performance in the context of what is often called the New Space Race. Previous work has been published in English, Mandarin, and Spanish in Theatre Research International, Performance Research, Text & Performance Quarterly, Theatre, Dance & Performance Training, among other journals and edited collections. Forthcoming work includes ‘Theatre, Ecology, Outer Space’, in The Cambridge Companion to Theatre and Ecology (Carl Lavery, ed.), and ‘Performing Lunar Climates’ in Climate Theatres (Eckersall et-al, eds). He facilitates the Planetary Performance Lab at UCLA and is a co-facilitator of the international network Social Studies of Outer Space. He serves on the Committee for the Cultural Utilisation of Outer Space (ITACCUS) of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF).

Cervera holds a status-only appointment as Graduate Faculty at the Centre for Drama, Theatre & Performance Studies of the University of Toronto and is a Visiting Research Fellow at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Singapore.

In 2022, he received an Honorable Mention for Outstanding Editing from the Association of Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) for his co-editoriship on the joint issue between Global Performance Studies (GPS) and the Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism titled ‘Collaborative Research in Theatre and Performance Studies’. In 2024, the double special issue, Decolonisation and Performance Studies, which Cervera co-edited, received the Best Edited Collection Award from the UK’s Theatre and Performance Research Association (TAPRA).

Cervera is Deputy Editor of Performance Research, one of the most prestigious and authoritative journals in performance studies. He sits on the editorial boards of Text & Performance Quarterly and AKDA: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance and ISSUE: Art Journal. He is currently co-convener of the Planetary Performance Lab and Ends: Collaborative Performance Research. From 2018 to 2024, he was an Editor of Global Performance Studies. He served on TAPRA’s Executive Committee from 2022 to 2024 and the Board of Directors of Performance Studies international (PSi) from 2015 to 2024.

Cervera has worked predominantly in Singapore and Mexico as an actor, performer, and director. In Singapore, he has collaborated with Ong Keng Sen (TheatreWorks), The Necessary Stage, Teater Ekamatra, Cake Theatre, Brian Gothong Tan, and SAtheCollective. In Mexico, he has worked with TeatroSinParedes, Richard Viqueria, Aziz Gual, and Teatro de los Sótanos, among others. He has participated in various international festivals in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. His latest directorial commission, Miss British, was commissioned by The Esplanade, Singapore’s national performing arts center. In LA, he was the dramaturg for Langugage of the Cosmos, a theatre, dance, and music festival jointly organized between NASA-JPL and the Los Angeles City Department of Cultural Affairs.

Before joining UCLA, Cervera lived in Singapore for twelve years, where he was a Lecturer in the School of Dance and Theatre at LASALLE, University of the Arts Singapore. He has an undergraduate degree in Dramatic Literature and Theatre from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, an MA in Drama by Practice-as-Research from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom, and a PhD in Theatre Studies from the National University of Singapore.
