UCLA Emerging Filmmakers Summer Resource Guide 2026

The information on this site is for the convenience of participants and does not suggest that the providers listed below are the only options. All arrangements made between the participants and these options are not the responsibility of the UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media.

Before Summer:

If admitted to the program, you will be able to reserve your space in the program by paying the non-refundable $350 registration fee.

Full fees are due by 5pm PDT May 1 for all UCLA Emerging Filmmakers programs. If registering for a program after the May 1 payment deadline, the full program fee will be due at the time of enrollment.

Both the participant and their parent/guardian will receive instructions for completing the required forms via DocuSign. Each signee will receive a separate email to sign their portion of the documents.These documents must be signed by both the participant and the parent/guardian on file for completion. You are only considered enrolled once the required forms are completed and when both the registration and program fees are paid. Failure to complete these items may result in the participant being dropped from the program.

The parent/guardian must also complete the Emergency Contact & Medical Questionnaire. The link to the form will be sent via email closer to program start.

Participants in UCLA Emerging Filmmakers Digital Filmmaking and UCLA Emerging Filmmakers Cinematography will be required to successfully complete a safety training course before the first day of the program to ensure safe practices while using film equipment and sound stages. Participants will be provided ample time to complete this training before the start of the program, and more information will be sent to participants once enrolled.

All tests must be completed with a passing score of 80% or higher. *** If this training is not completed by the deadline, you will be responsible for paying a $75 late fee. If you do not complete the training at all, you will be dropped from the program, and your spot will be given to a waitlisted student.

Instructions for completing this training are attached to your Welcome Email in a file titled: “UCLA SAFETY TRAINING INSTRUCTIONS.”

Packing List:

UCLA Housing provides a linen pack, which includes a sheet, top sheet, towel set, blanket, and pillow.

Please see your individual track’s Required Supply List Section (below) and bring them to the first day of class.

UCLA Emerging Filmmakers prioritizes safety and professionalism, and as such, has established a strict dress code to ensure a safe and productive production environment for all participants. Being appropriately and comfortably dressed for your classes, potential shoot days, and everyday life at UCLA can allow you to take full advantage of your time on campus.

The following guidelines must be adhered to by ALL PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS in order to maintain a safe and efficient working environment:

– No clothing that exposes undergarments or midriff

– No clothing with offensive or inappropriate language or imagery.

  • Recommended Packing List:
    • – Comfortable clothing that you can move around in
    • – Sweater and long pants (classrooms can get cold)
    • – Light layers (it is important to be prepared for changing weather conditions)
    • – Baseball hat or a hat with a brim
    • – Comfortable walking shoes
    • – Closed-toed shoes (required for parks visits and work on soundstages)
    • – One business casual outfit for the final screening and ceremony

Digital Filmmaking and Cinematography Track Requirements:

  • Due to the nature of their program, students within the Digital Filmmaking and Cinematography tracks must also abide by the On-Set Dress Code for the entirety of their program. For on-set productions or film shoots, students must abide by the following guidelines:
    • – No loose clothing – Excessively ripped or torn clothing may present a safety hazard. Students should not wear loose sleeves, exposed shirt tails, or jewelry that could get tangled in film equipment.
    • – Shirts that fully cover the shoulders and midriff – Comfortable, well-fitting clothing appropriate for a production environment.
    • – Full-length pants or jeans – Full-length pants or jeans offer protection by preventing contact with equipment, reducing the risk of scrapes or injury.
    • – Closed-toed, closed heel, rubber-soled shoes – Footwear that will protect your foot from heavy equipment, falling, or tripping is required for a set environment. (No sandals, flip-flops, ballet flats, crocs, slides, etc.)

Media Parks Track Requirements:

  • For site visits conducted as part of the Media Parks Program, students are required to:
    • – Wear their UCLA Emerging Filmmakers Program t-shirts for the duration of each site visit or program excursion.
    • – Altering or modifying the program t-shirts in any way, including cutting, is strictly prohibited.

Staying On Campus:

Check in: 4-6pm the Sunday before program start. Details on the exact date and location will be sent in your Welcome Email.

Participants will be living in the UCLA dorms for the duration of the program. Living on campus at UCLA has many advantages for Emerging Filmmakers.

The University provides comfortably furnished residence halls; and participants stay in air-conditioned triple rooms with assigned roommates based on gender. 

As part of your housing plan, you will have breakfast and dinner each day in the UCLA dining halls, recognized nationally for their excellent cuisine. Lunch is not provided, except on specific days with prior notice, and must be brought or purchased each day of class. You may consider any of the on-campus restaurants or eateries. Lunches usually range from $10-$25 UCLA Dining Hall and Restaurants.

For shorter meal breaks (5 – 20-minute walk):
Please see the UCLA ASUCLA Restaurants list for on-campus food options. Food from those on-campus restaurants can also be delivered using the Starship App.

Food delivery services such as Doordash and UberEats also deliver to campus.

For longer meal breaks (20 – 30-minute walk):
The Westwood Village Full Directory of restaurants is local to campus.

Participants are responsible for their own lunch and snacks, unless otherwise indicated. They will be able to purchase lunch on campus during their lunch break or store food items in designated refrigerators on the soundstages.

If you choose to explore Westwood Village and the UCLA store, and would like to purchase souvenirs, UCLA apparel, or anything else while you’re here, please bring some spending money to do so.

***Note that many businesses in Westwood are cashless.

UCLA Emerging Filmmakers does not offer transportation services from the airport. For detailed transportation information, please visit UCLA Transportation’s website.

BruinBus provides complimentary year-round service to the UCLA campus and Wilshire Center. Everyone is welcome to board at one of our many stops.

Other modes of transportation are available through the LA Metro system servicing greater Los Angeles.

MetroMicro is a new ride service offered in Westwood. Download the app on the App Store.

During Summer:

Daily classes are held in Melnitz Hall, 235 Charles E Young Dr E, Los Angeles, CA 90024, staff will guide participants to their assigned classrooms.

Program schedules can be found on individual track pages on the UCLA Emerging Filmmakers website. Updated schedules will be emailed closer to the program start date. Participants are engaged in activities and classes along with breaks throughout the day from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. There may be some mandatory evening classes / workshops.

Phones are not permitted during the program day. Phones will be collected each morning and stored safely. Participants will be permitted access to their phones in the case of emergencies or for program assignments. Phones will be returned during lunch and at the end of each day.

TFT Student Services is available to arrange tours and give information regarding admission, guidance, and student support.

Participants seeking care within the UCLA Health Network must ensure, with their parent/guardian, that their insurance provides adequate coverage.

The nearest emergency room is Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center located at 757 Westwood Place.

Bruin Safe Online is a website and mobile app to provide access to campus safety resources, emergency contact information, and up-to-date safety notifications during any incidents on campus

The UCLA Police Department (UCPD) offers evening walking escorts on campus (310-794-WALK). Participants can report safety concerns or any suspicious activities/behavior to UCPD at 310-825-1491.
Please dial 911 in case of an emergency.

ASUCLA is the student union center and includes several restaurants. The UCLA Store is located on the B-Level and includes a bookstore, market, computer store, and UCLA gift shop.

After Summer:

Upon completion of the program, each participant will receive a certificate of completion.

Participants will have the opportunity to evaluate the program and their overall experience with UCLA Emerging Filmmakers.
