What are the enrollment requirements for UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives?
Participants must be 14 years of age or older by the first day of the Theater Laboratory Intensives. Programs may impose further eligibility and admission requirements. Please visit the individual program page for details.
What type of background or experience should students have?
We welcome students of all backgrounds. However, it is necessary that participants have a sincere interest and commitment to learning within the theater.
Classroom Expectations
Each student will be provided with a syllabus that states class expectations and impact of tardiness and absences on the first day of class. Please note students who miss 2 classes will be asked to leave the program and a refund will not be provided.
Are parents welcome to attend the final presentation for performance based Theater Laboratory Intensives?
Yes, parents are encouraged to attend the final presentation, however tickets will be limited to two per student
Once accepted to UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives, how do I secure a space?
If admitted to the program, you will be able to reserve your space by paying the non-refundable $350 registration fee. A seat in the program is not reserved for you until the required non-refundable registration fee is paid. Participants must abide by all payment deadlines. After the May 1st payment deadline, a full payment of all program fees including the non-refundable registration fee will be due immediately to secure a space in the program. Please note that students will be dropped from the program for non-payment.
The $350 registration fee and the $35 application fee are non-refundable at all times, even if you drop all courses before they begin.
What is the payment deadline?
Full fees are due by 5pm PDT May 1 for all Theater Laboratory Intensives and Summer Institutes. If registering for a program after the May 1 payment deadline, the full program fee will be due at the time of enrollment.
What is the refund policy?
The non-refundable registration and application fees may NOT be refunded under any circumstances. The remaining applicable charges excluding the non-refundable registration and application fee are refundable if the program is dropped or cancelled before June 15, 2026.
Fees are 100% NON-refundable after the June 15 deadline and participants are financially liable for all fees if withdrawal occurs beyond those deadlines. It is the responsibility of each participant to know and comply with UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives policy and deadlines. Lack of knowledge of the UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives refund policy and deadlines. Lack of knowledge is not justification for a refund.
Is financial aid available for the Theater Laboratory Intensives ?
Unfortunately there is not financial aid available for these programs. We encourage students to explore the American Theater Wing, Andrew Lloyd Weber Training scholarship .
Are you receiving aid from a third party sponsor? How can I have my aid applied to my UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives bill?
During the summer, if a student is receiving a scholarship or sponsorship from a non-UCLA-affiliated third-party, the sponsor should contact theatersummerinstitutes@tft.ucla.edu
Note: If you plan to pay for classes with third party financial aid, you assume full responsibility for all fees. Regardless of when you receive financial aid from your sponsor, you are held to the UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives payment deadlines.
Can I enroll in an Theater Laboratory Intensive and a Summer Course or Institute?
Participants can enroll in an Theater Laboratory Intensive and a Summer Course or Institute, if there is no time conflict. Participants cannot enroll in an Theater Laboratory Intensive and a Summer Course or Institute with a time conflict. Please make sure to check the schedule for your course/program of interest and make sure there are no time conflicts.
Can I enroll in two or more Theater Laboratory Intensives?
Participants cannot enroll in multipleTheater Laboratory Intensives that have overlapping meeting times. Participants can take multiple Theater Laboratory Intensives if the dates do not overlap. Are international participants allowed to enroll in UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives?
International participants are welcome to enroll in UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives.
Participants in UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives are not eligible for F-1 visas. Participants should apply for the B-2 tourist visa in consultation with the local U.S. embassy or consulate. UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives does NOT provide visa advising or assistance. It is the responsibility of both the participant and their parent or guardian to contact the U.S. embassy or consulate to ensure that all applicable laws are followed.
If you are a non-native English-speaking participant, please be advised that our programs are intensive and that all work must be practiced in English. A sufficient command of the English language is necessary to participate in our programs.
What are the English language requirements for International Participants?
If you are from a country in which the official language is not English, you are required to submit proof of English proficiency.
For Content Creation and Scriptwriting, Costume Design, Lighting and Sound, Pit Orchestra, Scenic Design and Stage Management the minimum scores are:

What are the health insurance requirements for participants?
All participants attending in-person programs at UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives are required to have health insurance. Participants must demonstrate that they have insurance coverage by submitting documentation showing proof of coverage by uploading documentation into the enrollment form. The documentation required includes but is not limited to the following: a copy of their insurance card, a confirmation letter from their insurance provider, etc.
International participant health insurance should include coverage for dates starting from the first day of arrival in the U.S. to the last day the participant will attend UCLA Theater Laboratory Intensives, including vacations, during school breaks between academic quarters, and OPT/CPT participation. International participant health insurance must include repatriation (return) of remains and medical evacuation coverages.
