UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television Dean Represents Higher Education at Historic Lumière Summit

On September 7, 2026, UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television Dean Celine Parreñas Shimizu joined more than 220 international leaders and creative visionaries from over 65 countries, regions and international organizations at the inaugural Lumière Summit in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. Co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, this landmark gathering brought together influential figures from across cinema, television, animation and the moving image to address the industry’s most pressing challenges and shape its global future.

As one of only two higher education representatives invited to participate, Dean Shimizu brought an essential academic perspective to these high-level discussions and contributed to a collective call to action emphasizing the vital role of education in the future of creative industries.

The Summit resulted in a series of international commitments addressing artistic innovation, artificial intelligence, cultural diversity, sustainability and the future of screen industries. Among these outcomes was The Future of Creation Depends on the Future of Education, a call to action from leading film and moving image schools worldwide, to which Dean Shimizu contributed and added her signature.
