Program Overview

Augmented Reality and Theater is a three-week, UC credit-bearing intensive program for students interested in emerging technologies applied to performing arts. This institute provides opportunities to work with our distinguished faculty in classes that cover creative and technical development of a theatrical project incorporating augmented reality (AR). This experience will allow students to collaboratively develop theatrical scenes integrating Web-based AR with traditional production elements such as scenery, and lighting.  Students will learn the technical components of script adaptation, directing, and design while gaining hands-on experience. Beyond the classroom, students will attend guest workshops, and learn the art of collaboration. 

The program is designed for artists and students who seek additional discipline and training required for participation in a university theater program with a focus on interactive media or a career in the entertainment industry. Credit earned in these courses can fulfill some of the UCLA Undergraduate Theater requirements.  Participation in this institute is open to college students.

      • Students will get a mix of classroom, studio, and on-stage instruction that brings together strategies for collaborative devising of live performance with development of augmented reality (AR) that is integrated into the audience experience.  They will have skills classes that cover conceptualization, direction, lighting, sound, and media for the stage, as well as introduction to web-based AR development.  Students will then have an opportunity to take on more specialized roles in smaller groups to co-develop a final performance project.  There will be about an even balance between work “on their feet” in the theater and in preparation.

      The institute is geared towards all students interested in building multi-disciplinary skills that apply across all aspects of production including emerging technologies.  The final production project will be organized based on the skills and interests of students expressed in a pre-institute survey. Students should expect opportunities to work in their specific areas of interest that are balanced with new roles and opportunities.

      The institute combines experience with augmented reality, which will continue to grow in use and popularity across social media, live entertainment, and business applications, with an opportunity for building skills and experience in creative collaboration across disciplines, which is critical to success in a variety of fields.

Program Details

On Campus (Commuter)
As a commuter, housing contracts are not available through UCLA Housing Department, however, the UCLA Summer Hostel that is located on the residence hill provides housing options for all registered UCLA Summer Sessions who are 18 years of age or older. For those who will not securing housing on campus, it is expected that students who fall into this category will commute to class daily.


Parking:
Summer Sessions parking permits will be available beginning May 30 on a first-come, first-served basis. Students have the option to purchase a summer term permit or a daily permit.

Grades and Transcripts
Program participants will earn units of credit on a letter-grading basis and will be recorded on an official University of California transcript. Please note that official transcripts are not automatically sent to students. To request a transcript, please contact the UCLA Registrar’s Office.

Requirements

Admission to the institute is by instructor consent.
Each applicant will be required to submit a resume and statement in response to the answers listed on the application.
All skill levels are welcome though the program is limited to undergraduates.
