Beginning with an overview of the recent controversy over the casting of a white actor in the role of Oliver in the Broadway production of Hue Park and Will Aronson’s musical Maybe Happy Ending, Professor Lee raise questions about racial representation on Broadway, what is identifiably “Korean” about the musical, the show’s affinity with South Korean television dramas (K-drama) and other instances of hallyu, and how Maybe Happy Ending might relate to Asian American memory.
Josephine Lee is a professor of English and Asian American Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and the editor in chief of The Oxford Encyclopedia of Asian American Literature and Culture. She is the author of four books and editor of several other collections of essays.
Presented in collaboration with the Asian American Studies Center, Center for Korean Studies, the Center for Performance Studies, Department of Asian American Studies, Department of Theater, and School of Theater, Film, and Television Dean’s Office.
