Man of the World

Before he made the “flippy, trippy” documentary Mondo Hollywood, UCLA alumnus Robert Carl Cohen spent time during the first decade of the Cold War filming as an NBC News special correspondent in China and as an independent documentary producer in both East Germany and Cuba. A two-day Archive retrospective on Cohen’s work begins Friday, Dec. 9. Read more about his story here.

Musical theater alumni Gillian Bozajian (BA ’17), Kay Sibal (BA ’22) and Kelsey Lee Smith (BA ’18) are cast members in the new Pat Benatar musical Invincible.

Cinematographer Stephen H. Burum, ASC (BA ’62, MA ’65) received the lifetime achievement award in November from the prestigious 2022 Energa CAMERIMAGE film festival in Torun, Poland.


Larry Cedar (MFA ’78) portrayed Senator Mitch McConnell in 44: The Unofficial, Unsanctioned Obama Musical, which closed a sold-out run in November at The Bourbon Room in Hollywood.

Long Beach Opera, led by artistic director James Darrah (MFA ’10), has been listed as one of the Top 10 in the Los Angeles Times’ recently published “Best Classical of 2022” list. Singled out for their excellence were LBO’s productions of Giustino, directed by Darrah, designed by Adam Rigg (BA ’09) with video by Michael Thomas (MFA ’18); and The Central Park Five, directed by Professor J.Ed Araiza with costumes by Molly Irelan (MFA ’16). Lecturer Pablo Santiago (MFA ’13) created the lighting design for both productions.


Channing Dungey (BA ’91) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (BA ’91) are featured in The Hollywood Reporter’s latest Women in Entertainment issue. 

Jeff Liu (MFA ’94) directs Daniel Kim (BA ’19) in The Brothers Paranormal at the East West Players through Dec. 11.

Christopher Lucero (MFA ’04) has been named executive director, Licensing and Brand Management at Endemol Shine North America.

Professor Sylvan Oswald’s play Trainers, directed by Jessica Kubzansky, will have a reading at Boston Court Pasadena, Dec. 11.

Ella Pravetz (BA ’16), the executive creative director of Misfits Gaming Group, has been named to the 2023 Forbes 30 Under 30 list.
