UCLA Film & Television Archive presents “Remembering WWI’s Bloodiest Battles”
Oh! What a Lovely War (UK, 1969), directed by Richard Attenborough
The three Smith brothers and their family function as British “everymen” in this cabaret interpretation of World War I, which interpolates musical scenes into stylized visions from the working class perspective of the carnage of the war. Director Richard Attenborough’s first film began life as a London stage show, and features stellar bits by Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde and Susannah York.
