Raquel Barreto

Adjunct Assistant Professor

“RaquelRaquel Barreto is an L.A.-based costume designer working in theater, dance and opera. She recently completed her fourth season at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she designed Julius Caesar, The Happiest Song Plays Last, Pericles, Water by the Spoonful and the world premieres of Roe and The River Bride.

Barreto’s designs have been on stage at The Guthrie Theater; Berkeley Repertory Theater; Syracuse Stage; Actors Theatre of Louisville; Folger Shakespeare Theater; The California Shakespeare Theater; Guild Hall; Cornerstone Theater Company; Latino Theater Company, Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.; and many others. Los Angeles projects include Luis Alfaro’s Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles, performed at the Getty Villa outdoor amphitheater; and David Mamet’s American Buffalo with Deaf West Theater.

Her collaborations with L.A.-based dance company BODYTRAFFIC have been seen at The Hollywood Bowl, The Broad Stage, L.A. Philharmonic, The Joyce Theater, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and many others. Barreto designed costumes for Opera UCLA’s productions of Mansfield Park, Lucrezia/Bastianello and The Coronation of Poppea.

Barreto is a native of Brazil and received her bachelor of arts degree from UC Berkeley. She holds an M.F.A in costume design from UC San Diego and taught at UC Berkeley before joining the faculty at UCLA TFT. She is a member of United Scenic Artists Local USA829.
