Admissions for Theater and Performance Studies PhD

All the Theater, Film and Television degree programs are full-time, day-time programs. We only accept students for the Fall quarter, and this admissions information is for Fall Quarter 2012


APPLICATION POSTMARK DEADLINE: DECEMBER 10, 2011


Admission Requirements:



  • Online UCLA Graduate Division Application and Application Fee.* Make sure to indicate Theater as your major and MFA as your degree.

  • Online UCLA Theater Department Graduate Application.

  • Statement of Purpose.*

  • Resume of training and experience in theater or other related work*

  • Two official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work. You may upload unofficial copies of your transcripts as part of your application. NOTE: Community college transcripts are not necessary, as the coursework will be reflected on your undergraduate transcript. Please have transcripts sent to the address below or include them in your application packet in sealed envelopes.

  • Three Letters of Recommendation. Please enter the names and other information about your recommenders in the online Graduate Division Application. Letters may be submitted electronically or by mail. If submitted by mail, letter writers are encouraged to attach the UCLA Graduate Division Letter of Recommendation cover sheet.

  • A copy of the master’s thesis or a scholarly research paper of at least 20 pages which demonstrates your thought process and skills in research and analysis of theater history, literature, or live performance. Welcomed, but not required, are published articles, non-text-based materials, or reviews of creative work.

  • The Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Be sure to list the GRE institution code for UCLA R4837 and the Department code 2403 for the Department of Theater or Drama.

  • For International Applicants: Confidential Financial Statement*

  • For International Applicants whose first language is not English: Scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) . Be sure to list the TOEFL institution code for UCLA 4837 and the Department code 53 for the Department of Theater or Dramatic Arts. For more information about these requirements, click here.
