Track 6: Cinematography
The UCLA Film and Television Cinematography Summer Institute gives students an unparalleled opportunity to study cinematography at one of the most prestigious film schools in the world. This one-week intensive workshop immerses students in the concepts, creativity and technique of cinematic lighting. Through lectures, discussions, and hands-on group exercises, students will form a basic understanding of the aesthetic, creative, and logistical decisions involved in lighting for film and television. This includes composition, framing, blocking, lens choice, camera movement/placement, exposure, lighting techniques/equipment, shot design, and set protocol.
- Students work on UCLA sound stages with the latest digital cinema cameras and lighting equipment
- The program curriculum consists of a combination of lectures and hands-on lighting exercises
- This workshop carries two units of UCLA college credit
- As part of the program, students will visit a Hollywood Camera House or Post Production House
- All class exercises will be screened in a state-of-the-art theater during the certificate ceremony at the end of the workshop. Friends and family are welcome!
This program carries 2 quarter units of UC credit. Students in this track are enrolled in FTV 75 Lighting for Film and Television.
Admission to the program is by instructor consent only. This track is open to high school students enrolled in 10th - 12th grade in Spring 2020 and undergraduate college students with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. As part of the application process students must submit a statement of purpose, answer short essay prompts, and submit one letter of recommendation and an unofficial transcript.
Register Online. In order to secure your spot, a $150 nonrefundable deposit is due upon completion of your application for the program. You may pay by credit or debit card using our secure online credit card form. Your $150 deposit is nonrefundable and will be applied towards your balance once enrolled in the program.
Grades and Transcripts
Program participants will earn units of credit on a letter grading basis and will be recorded on an official University of California transcript. Please note that official transcripts are not automatically sent to students. To request a transcript, please contact the UCLA Registrar’s Office.
Participants and their guardians/parents are responsible for arranging meals, housing accommodations, and a means of transportation to and from the program.
Summer Scholars Support
Scholarship support may be available for continuing California high school students with a family annual adjusted gross income of $115,000 or less. For deadlines, eligibility requirements and application information, please visit the Summer Scholars Support page.
