Professional Program in Producing
The Professional Program in Producing is modeled after the UCLA M.F.A. Producers Program and provides an intensive overview of the contemporary film, TV and digital media landscape, up-to-the-minute industry insight, and the tools needed to navigate the studio and independent marketplace.
Small seminar-style lectures and Q&A sessions provide ample opportunity to network with like-minded, ambitious individuals with varied professional backgrounds. Many students have formed business connections with classmates, developed projects together and shaped partnerships.
Taught by core UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television faculty, this graduate-level competitive program also features notable guest speakers such as Billy Ray (The Hunger Games), Whitney Wade (God of War series), Paul Green (The Revenant), Sheila Hanahan-Taylor (Final Destination series), Eric Shamlin (Virtual Reality), Adam Fogelson (Chairman of STX) and many more.
Upon successful completion of the program, students receive a certificate from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television.

Application Procedure Overview:The Professional Program in Producing features an admissions process based on supporting application materials. The prerequisite for this program is that applicants must possess an undergraduate bachelor's degree. Once we have received a complete application, the applicant will be notified of admission status via email within 20 business days. It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide a working email address with the application. Please note: both Hotmail and MSN send our UCLA email to your spam folder, or they block us altogether. We strongly suggest creating a gmail email address for your application.

1. Application Form: Applicants to the Professional Program in Producing must submit a completed application form via fax or mail. Applications will not be accepted via email. The link to the application form is included above.
2. Professional Resume: Your resume should include your career and educational background, as well as any extra-curricular activities, awards, or interests that you feel would be pertinent.
3. One-page Statement of Purpose: Your Statement of Purpose is simply a short essay in which we'd like you to tell us a little about yourself, your professional experience and goals. Your Statement of Purpose should be one full page in length.
4. Undergraduate Bachelor's Transcript or Copy of Degree Certificate or DegreeVerify Certificate from National Student Clearinghouse: Although we do not take college grades into consideration, we require proof that an undergraduate Bachelor's degree has been conferred. Please provide a copy of your transcript (an unofficial copy is okay), OR a copy of your degree certificate, OR a DegreeVerify Certificate from National Student Clearinghouse. Alternatively, if you have an advanced degree such as an MFA, we will accept that transcript or certificate.
The tuition cost for the Professional Program in Producing is $5,500. Payments are collected in two installments: $2,000 is due upon admission to the program, with the balance normally due a few weeks prior to the start of the program (please see the application form for specific dates). Applicants must provide payment information with their application. The second page of the application form includes an area for credit card information (we accept Visa, MasterCard, Amex and Discover). For the initial fee of $2,000, we accept credit card payments only. Students may pay their tuition balance with a cashier's check or money orders; see application form for details.
Application Fee: There is no application fee for our programs. If an applicant is not admitted, the applicant will not be charged.
Financial Aid: At this time, financial aid is not available for any of our courses.

International applicants must be at least 21 years old by the start of the program.
If you are a non-native English-speaking student, please be advised that our professional programs are intensive and that all work must be practiced in English. A sufficient command of the English language is necessary to participate in our courses. A TOEFL score of 560 (paperbased) or 87 (internet based iBT) will be necessary to participate in this course.
The only visas approved by the U.S. government and UCLA for the Professional Programs are the F-1 or J-1 visas. No other visas will be accepted.
If you are enrolled in the Professional Programs and need a F-1 or J-1 visa, you will first need to apply for a UCLA I-20 (F-1) or UCLA DS2019 (J-1). The I-20 or DS2019 is the document that you will bring to your local American consulate in order to obtain your visa. First, apply for the UCLA Professional Program of your choice per the admission instructions. If you are admitted, you may request an I-20 or DS2019 application from us. At that point, you will need to complete the I-20 or DS 2019 application and provide a number of supporting financial documents, as well as a copy of the photo page from your passport. (J-1 applicants will also need a letter from a non-personal sponsor stating that they will be covering at least 51% of your expenses while you are enrolled in your UCLA Professional Program.) We will send you instructions in an email.
Participation in TFT Professional Programs is prohibited under the B1/B2 visas/ESTA visa waiver program (WT/WB).
To allow enough time to obtain a visa, you must apply to our programs by the posted International Student Application Deadline. International students are encouraged to apply for the Professional Program as early as possible. The longer the wait, the less likely it will be that you will have enough time to secure your visa before the course begins. There is no discount for international students who arrive late to the program.
Please be advised that there is a non-refundable $340 I-20 or DS2019 processing fee payable to UCLA. You will be charged this fee once your I-20 or DS2019 is processed. In addition, please be aware that students entering the United States on a F-1 or J-1 visa must first pay a $180 SEVIS fee to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

DENISE MANN is a professor and head of the graduate M.F.A. Producers Program in the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television's Department of Film, Television and Digital Media. She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on contemporary entertainment industry practices as well as film and television history and theory. Mann is the editor of Wired TV: Laboring over an Interactive Future (New Jersey: Rutgers University Press, 2014) and the author of Hollywood Independents: The Postwar Talent Takeover (University of Minnesota Press, 2008). She co-edited Private Screenings: Television & the Female Consumer (University of Minnesota Press, 1992) and has published articles on television and consumer culture in a number of journals and book-length collections. In addition to speaking at annual scholarly conferences, Mann routinely delivers lectures on the contemporary entertainment industry. She has appeared at a number of high-profile events, including international film festivals and conferences such as the Tokyo International Film Festival and Shanghai International Film Festival, and at major universities in Asia and Europe such as The Communication University of China, Shanghai University, University of Paris 1, Pantheon-Sorbonne and Institut National de L'Audiovisuel (INA).
BOB BIBB (Television Marketing) is a television marketing executive who helped create two broadcast networks from the ground up: FOX and The WB. He has led the creative and media strategy for over 300 primetime television series across broadcast, cable, and digital platforms. Along with longtime collaborator, Lew Goldstein, Bibb now runs BG Company, a marketing consulting firm with clients including DreamWorks Animation, Microsoft, and Endemol Studios. Some of the long-running series Bibb managed as head of marketing include: Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Gilmore Girls, Smallville, Supernatural, Dawson’s Creek, Charmed, Felicity, and Project Runway (Lifetime). Bibb has twice been awarded “Entertainment Marketer of the Year” by Advertising Age. He is a graduate of New York University’s Tisch School and a Louie B. Mayer Fellow.
DAVID BLACKMAN (Feature Film Development) is the president of production for Sony-based Laurence Mark Productions (Last Vegas, Julie & Julia, I, Robot, Jerry Maguire, As Good as It Gets, Dreamgirls, The Lookout). At Laurence Mark Productions, he is in charge of overseeing all aspects of development and production for the company. Most recently, he served as a producer on the Lionsgate film Date and Switch, starring Nicholas Braun, Dakota Johnson, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Aziz Ansari and Wendi McClendon-Covey. He also served as an executive producer on Center Stage: Turn It Up for Sony Stage 6 and was co-executive producer on Summer Camp, a pilot for Nickelodeon. He is attached as a producer or executive producer on a number of feature and television projects, including a remake of Flatliners at Sony and Lady Chatterley's Lover, which is being adapted by Oscar-nominated screenwriter David Magee.
PETER BRODERICK (Alternative Distribution) is a leading distribution strategist. He spearheads the distribution of exceptional documentaries and consults with independent filmmakers around the world. He helps design and implement customized plans to maximize revenues, audience and impact. He is president of Paradigm Consulting, which specializes in state-of-the-art distribution techniques, including innovative theatrical service deals, hybrid strategies and new approaches to global distribution. Previously, Broderick was president of Next Wave Films, which supplied finishing funds and other vital support to filmmakers from the U.S. and abroad. He helped launch the careers of outstanding directors including Christopher Nolan and Amir Bar-Lev. Broderick’s reports, “Welcome to the New World of Distribution” and “Declaration of Independence” are concise guides to the latest distribution strategies. JOSH BYCEL (The Showrunner: Half Hour Comedy) is an executive producer and writer for the new Eva Longoria show on NBC. He is also under an overall deal at NBC Universal. He was an executive producer and writer for ABC's Happy Endings and Scrubs. He has written and produced TV shows for ABC, CBS, Fox, NBC, USA, Comedy Central, the WB and MTV. He has also written for the Academy Awards, hosted by Jon Stewart, and the MTV Movie Awards. He is also the executive director and founder of OneKid OneWorld, a non-profit rebuilding schools in Kenya and El Salvador, as well as bringing fresh water and solar power to these rural areas…and partnering each of these over-seas schools with schools in the United States. Since 2006, OneKid OneWorld has raised more than $1,200,000, with 93% going directly to projects. The lives of more than 10,000 students have been directly affected thanks to OneKid OneWorld efforts.
LISA CALLIF (Legal Issues for Independent Film) was named by the Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Women Lawyers in 2014 and by Variety as one of The Best and The Brightest (2011). She is an entertainment attorney whose primary focus is on representing independent filmmakers in all aspects of their moviemaking, including development, production and distribution. As part of her practice, Callif does a significant amount of clearance work for documentaries, including rendering fair use opinion letters, which permit her clients to use limited amounts of unlicensed material in their films under the fair use doctrine as codified in U.S. Copyright Law. Callif has recently rendered legal services on such films as 20 Feet From Stardom (Academy Award Winner 2014), Invisible War (Grand Jury Prize, Best Documentary, Sundance 2012), Inside Job (Academy Award winner 2011), Insidious (from the producers of Paranormal Activity), How to Die in Oregon (Grand Jury Prize, Best Documentary, Sundance 2011), I'm Still Here (starring Joaquin Phoenix), Waiting for 'Superman', The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and The Pentagon Papers (Academy Award nominee 2010). With her law partner Michael Donaldson, Callif co-wrote The American Bar Association’s Legal Guide to Independent Filmmaking.
SCOTT CARTER (Producing the Talk Show) is Executive Producer/Writer for Real Time With Bill Maher which has just been renewed through 2015 on HBO. He produced the first 1,100 episodes of Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher, from its 1993 Comedy Central debut to its 1997 move to ABC. While at P.I., producer/writer Carter won eight Emmy nominations and three consecutive CableAce Awards for Best Talk Series. In 1997 Variety named him one of 50 Creatives To Watch. In 2007, he won the Producers' Guild Of America's Johnny Carson Award for Real Time. In 2000, Carter left P.I. for Oxygen Media to serve as Executive Producer for two seasons of Exhale With Candice Bergen. He also produced Conversations From The Edge with Carrie Fisher: George Lucas from Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and Oxygen Forum: Al Gore, a live 90-minute town hall in 2000. He also created The Conspiracy Zone with Kevin Nealon for what is now SpikeTV. He was also Co-Executive Producer/Co-Head Writer For Earth To America, a two hour special on TBS in 2005. He also served for two seasons as Co-Creator, Executive Producer/Writer for Lewis Black's Root Of All Evil on Comedy Central. Carter began his TV career as a writer for MTV's Mouth To Mouth in 1988. He then served as producer/writer for three other Comedy Central projects produced by HBO Downtown Productions: Night After Night With Allen Havey (1989-92), SportsMonster (1990-91) and The Olympiacs (1992). Carter performed stand-up regularly through the 1980's in major comedy clubs across the country including The Comic Strip, The Original Improvisation, Catch a Rising Star, and The Comedy Store. He has also written two full-length monologues (Heavy Breathing and Suspension Bridge) which he's performed at The Edinburgh (Scotland) Fringe Festival, The U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, Garry Marshall's Falcon Theatre, Michael Patrick King's Arcade, The HBO Workspace, Primary Stages, Manhattan Punch-line, Dixon Place, The Cleveland Performance Festival, The Skirball Cultural Center and The Murphy's Cat Laughs Festival (in Kilkenny, Ireland). His full-length play, The Gospel According to Thomas Jefferson, Charles Dickens and Count Leo Tolstoy: DISCORD had an extremely successful 2014 and was produced at both the NoHo Arts Center and the Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles. DISCORD was published by Dramatists Play Service in 2015 and will be produced by the Northlight Theatre in Chicago and by the Arizona Theatre Company in 2016. Carter was raised in Tucson, Arizona. He attended the University of Arizona and, last year, was inducted into The University Of Arizona Wildcat Hall Of Fame.
DEAN CHELEY (Legal Issues for Independent Projects) is an entertainment attorney who offers expertise in all areas of the entertainment industry, including structuring deals and negotiating contracts for individuals and corporations involved in the film and television industry. He works with book authors, screenwriters, performers, directors and producers, as well as institutions such as studios, networks, guilds and talent agencies. Prior to joining the firm, Dean litigated numerous types of entertainment disputes, including copyright and trademark infringement, rights of publicity, breach of contract and partnership disputes. Mr. Cheley received his law degree in 2006 from the University of California, Berkeley (Boalt Hall), where he was awarded the American Jurisprudence Award and was Executive Editor of The Berkeley Technology & Law Journal. While at law school, he interned at the Samuelson Intellectual Property Clinic, where he authored comments on behalf of media archives, filmmakers and libraries in response to a US Copyright Notice of Inquiry concerning orphan works and exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Prior to his career in law, Mr. Cheley worked as a producer and consultant for companies developing new media technologies, e-commerce, and branded entertainment. He brings this experience to bear advising his clients with regard to copyright, trademark, licensing and other IP matters, as well as marketing and other promotional activities related to the entertainment industry. Dean earned his bachelor’s degree from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in Digital & New Media Studies, an Interdisciplinary Program sponsored by faculty in the schools of Design, Film and Television and Communication.
JOHN COVENY (Producing the One Hour Television Drama) Born in Pittsburgh into an Irish/Italian family that loved television and movies, John Coveny is the youngest of five children. The entire Coveny clan journeyed from Pittsburgh to St. Louis and eventually settled in Atlanta. There, “Coveny” grew up in the booming South, “a transplanted Yankee”, and attended Marist High School. Next stop, South Bend, Indiana, where he graduated from Notre Dame with a BBA and a harmless police record. Two weeks later, Coveny started working at Leo Burnett Advertising in Chicago, rising from a media buyer to VP/Creative Director over a 13-year career that made him realize his dreams were out West. Upon setting foot in the LA, Coveny quickly learned that the living the dream requires a lot of reality: employment as a writer in Hollywood was not “overnight” and eventually a spec screenplay led to a meeting that led a meeting that led to another meeting that led to yet another meeting that got him and his writing partner, Hunt Baldwin, their first big break as staff writers on FOX’s Fastlane. Finally, they were in -- with a view of a dumpster, on the back lot of WB Burbank. But their showbiz careers were underway…sort of. Fastlane was cancelled, and a career “hiatus” ensued. Specs were written, and the phone finally rang in 2004. It was a new unknown show called The Closer. And that is where what was meant to happen actually happened. Coveny has been writing ever since and rose to Co-Executive Producer status on The Closer while developing projects with Warner Bros TV, and Shephard/Robin: Trust Me for TNT, and most notably, LONGMIRE, which is entering its 6th Season on Netflix. Coveny lives with his wife, Amelia, and their 14 year old bulldog, Matilda, in Los Feliz.
CATHERINE DENT (Working With Actors) Catherine Dent arrested audiences as "Officer Danny Sofer" in The Shield (2002), playing a single woman in a world that understands brutality more than beauty. Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and trained at the North Carolina School of the Arts, Dent made her film debut in 1994, playing Paul Newman's daughter-in-law in Robert Benton's Nobody's Fool (1994). Since then she has appeared in a number of features, co-starring opposite Greg Kinnear in Paul Schrader's Auto Focus (2002), starring opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in Replicant (2001), playing Ashley Judd's sister in Tony Goldwyn's romantic comedy Someone Like You... (2001) and appearing with Jim Carrey in Frank Darabont's The Majestic (2001). Her independent film credits include appearances in A Girls' Guide to Sex (1993), Jaded (1998), A New Game (2001), The Debutante (1993) and Dangerous Proposition (1998). When she was based in New York, Dent appeared frequently on East Coast-based based television shows including The Sopranos (1999), Third Watch (1999), Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) and New York Undercover (1994). Since moving to Los Angeles she has guest-starred on such series as Dharma & Greg (1997), The X-Files (1993), Frasier (1993), The Pretender (1996), Chicago Hope (1994) and The Invisible Man (2000). In addition to her starring role on the acclaimed drama series "The Shield", she also starred in Steven Spielberg's Taken (2002) on the Sci-Fi Channel. Her theater credits include the title role in "Baby Doll", Maggie in "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" and roles in "Bang The Drum Slowly" and "The Street of the Sun" at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles. In New York she starred Off-Broadway in "Amoeba Concerto" and understudied for the Sofya and Yelena roles in "Uncle Vanya" on Broadway.
MICHAEL DONALDSON (Clearance and Copyright, Negotiating) is an entertainment attorney who has been fighting for independent filmmakers for over thirty-five years. Dubbed the "'legal Obi Wan Kenobi' and fair use guru of the documentary film set" by the American Bar Association, Michael has gained a national reputation as an expert on clearance- and rights- related issues. He successfully negotiated with insurance companies to offer fair use riders on the E&O insurance policies which has allowed many films to be made under the fair use doctrine. He served on the Advisory Committee for the Documentary Filmmakers Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use and currently serves on the Advisory Committee of the Stanford Fair Use Project. Michael is the past President of The International Documentary Association (IDA) and current General Counsel to Film Independent and Writers Guild of America/West Foundation. He co-wrote The American Bar Association's Legal Guide to Independent Filmmaking with his partner Lisa Callif. He also wrote Clearance & Copyright (which is in its third edition and is used as a textbook in over 50 colleges and universities).
MIKE FARAH (Producing for the Web) is the President of Production for Funny Or Die, focused on Funny Or Die's longform premium content and new business projects. Farah has won Primetime Emmys for his work as executive producer of "Between Two Ferns with Zach Galfianakis: President Obama" in 2014 and "Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis: Brad Pitt" in 2015 . Currently he is the executive producer of "Billy on the Street", airing on TruTV and TBS, “@midnight” airing on Comedy Central, "Funny or Die's America's Next Weatherman" on TBS, and the "Ferrell Takes the Field" special on HBO. Farah, originally from Ann Arbor, Michigan and a graduate of Indiana University, started at Funny or Die in 2008. He was named one of the top 35 Hollywood executives under 35 by The Hollywood Reporter in 2010, was named one of “Hollywood’s New Leaders" by Variety in 2013, and was fired from his job as a food expeditor at The Standard, Hollywood, in 2004.
RICHARD FAY (Domestic Theatrical Distribution) is the president of domestic theatrical distribution for Lionsgate Distribution. Working closely with the exhibitors and filmmakers, Fay develops, oversees and executes the distribution strategy for the Lionsgate domestic film slate. Fay has over 40 years experience in the film industry most recently as President of Summit Entertainment (2007-2012) and before that heading his own firm, Fay Enterprises, which consulted for a number of enterprises including Deluxe Labs, several motion pictures, and in-theatre marketing companies including Movie Me and Timeplay. Prior to starting his own firm in 2005, Fay was the President of AMC Film Marketing for 10 years where he was responsible for film buying and in-theatre marketing. During his tenure at AMC, Fay was also responsible for negotiating all the film settlements with distributors and initiating aggregate film deals as AMC grew into a circuit of Megaplexes.
ALLEN FISCHER (Representation) is a partner at Principato-Young Entertainment, one of the leading management and production companies in the business. After graduating from the prestigious Wharton School at the Universal of Pennsylvania, he started his career at Creative Artists Agency and transitioned into the growing field of management and production in 2000. Allen is a committee member in the Representation Peer Group of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and his clients are some of the top writers and directors in the business. Director clients include F. Gary Gray (STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON, upcoming FAST & FURIOUS 8), Jon M. Chu (GI:JOE RETALIATION, JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER, upcoming NOW YOU SEE ME 2), Steven Quale (INTO THE STORM, upcoming Luc Besson’s THE LAKE), Ari Sandel (Academy Award winning director of THE DUFF, upcoming MONSTER HIGH), Sylvain White (STOMP THE YARD, THE LOSERS), Mike Tiddes (A HAUNTED HOUSE 1 & 2, upcoming FIFTY SHADES OF BLACK), Dan Attias (TRUE DETECTIVE, WALKING DEAD, HOMELAND), Matt Shakman (HEROES: REBORN, CUTBANK, IT’S ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILIDELPHIA), Tim Hill (GRUMPY CAT’S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER, HOP, ALVIN AND THE CHIMPMUNKS), Larry Sher (upcoming BASTARDS), and Lev Spiro (MODERN FAMILY, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK). Allen also represents actor/comedian/writer Ed Helms, who starred in THE HANGOVER movies and was a cast member of THE OFFICE. On the production front, Allen’s THE SEA OF TREES, directed by Gus van Sant and starring Matthew McConaughey, is due for release next year. Allen is attached to produce numerous features at every major studio and is responsible for selling many scripts and pitches every year.
ALEX FRANKLIN (Hollywood and Global Responsibility) is a Lecturer in the UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media where he teaches graduate and undergraduate courses about Development, Production and International Markets. He is a veteran of the Hollywood studio system, having worked as a Development and Production Executive at New Line Cinema, Dimension Films, Lionsgate Films and Artisan Entertainment, where he specialized in genre films. After leaving the world of studio development, Alex co-founded Pangea Pictures, a visual effects and post-production services company. Currently, he is Head of Film and Television at Partos Company, where he represents A-List Cinematographers, Production Designers and Costume Designers. He is a graduate of Harvard University and has an MFA from the USC Peter Stark Producing Program.
ADAM FOGELSON (Feature Film Marketing) was chairman of Universal Pictures from October 2009 to 2013. He oversaw worldwide operations for the motion picture group, including its global theatrical, home entertainment, partnerships & licensing, finance, human resources and communications divisions. Fogelson had been with Universal since 1998, beginning as Vice President of Creative Advertising and rising to President of Marketing and Distribution before his promotion to Chairman. PAUL GREEN (Feature Film Financing) is the president & COO of Anonymous Content. He joined Anonymous in April 2004, after having previously worked with Anonymous CEO Steve Golin at Propaganda Films. At Anonymous, Green oversees the operations of AC's film, television and talent management divisions, and is responsible for strategic planning for film, commercial (broadcast and internet) and music video production. His cutting-edge digital and traditional international marketing campaigns drove the international theatrical division to $2.7 Billion in box office. In one year alone, Greenberg’s strategies produced six $100M+ international box office releases: breaking a company record and tying an industry record. Greenberg strategized and executed the overseas releases of such films as The Mummy Returns, Jurassic Park III, American Pie 2, The Fast and the Furious, The Bourne Identity, Red Dragon, 8 Mile, The Hulk, 2Fast 2Furious, American Pie: The Wedding and Intolerable Cruelty among over 40 others. Greenberg received his Bachelor’s degree in Marketing/Finance from the University of Denver. TIMOTHY GOOD (Post Production Editing) was born and raised in Chicago, IL, and graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Radio/TV/Film. He traveled to Los Angeles to pursue a career in film editing. After 7 years of apprenticeship with some incredible mentors, he began editing on television series such as THE O.C., GOSSIP GIRL, FRINGE, and UNDER THE DOME. He co-edited his first feature film, DEAD MAN DOWN, directed by Niels Arden Oplev of the original GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Next up, he will be co-producer on BELIEVE, a television series from J.J. Abrams and Alfonso Cuarón. He will supervise all creative post-production. He was recently inducted into the American Cinema Editors, an honorary society of elite editors in the industry. Tim is also a visiting professor at UCLA, teaching editing to all directors and cinematographers in UCLA’s graduate MFA program.
SHEILA HANAHAN-TAYLOR (Creative Producing) is the founder of Practical Pictures, a Production Company specializing in studio pictures with a global appeal. Known as a cradle-to-grave producer, Sheila’s skill set includes story development, marketplace analysis, fundraising and budgeting, on-set creative producing, and editing room savvy. Sheila has been involved with numerous studio franchises including Universal’s American Pie and New Line’s Final Destination 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. BEAU MARKS (Line Producing) is a third generation member of the Directors Guild of America and a fourth generation filmmaker. He got his start in the film business pulling cable on independent films before becoming an Assistant Director for Universal Studios in TV and features. He worked his way up to A.D. and Unit Production Manager, earning his first producing credit on 20th Century Fox’s Predator with director John McTiernan. Marks collaborated with McTiernan on Die Hard and Hunt for Red October. He went on to develop projects with The Wachowskis, Ridley Scott and Darren Aronofsky.After 43 years in the film industry, Marks was invited to join the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television where he works both as staff and lecturer in the Department of Film, Television and Digital Media.
ERIC MARIN (Post Production Sound/Sound Design) Eric is a film editor with extensive experience in both feature and documentary picture and sound editing and mixing. He has edited, among other films, Wedding Dress (based on the play by the renowned Brazilian playwright Nelson Rodrigues), The Monk and the Hangman's Daughter (based on a story by Ambrose Bierce), and the documentaries Breaking the Maya Code, Mysterious California (examining four novels by California mystery writers) Women of Mystery (featuring three leading American female mystery writers) and Looking Like the Enemy (about the war experiences of Asian American veterans). Most recently, Eric served as the picture and sound editor and re-recording mixer on the documentary Something Like a Sabbatical as well as the sound editor on the feature documentary Occupy the Farm and as the re-recording sound mixer on the feature documentary The Art of Observing Life about the founders of the direct cinema movement. Additionally, Eric has produced, directed, shot and edited several contemporary music and performance documentaries including Baschet: The Transfiguration of Daily Life (awarded Best Art Documentary at the Parnu International Documentary Festival 2004 and Grand Prix de la Recherche at the Festival International du Film d’Art, Paris, 2003). His works have been seen on PBS and The Learning Channel and have been screened at festivals and various venues worldwide. Other film awards include the Nissan FOCUS documentary award, the Bronze Apple from the National Education Festival, the CINE Eagle award, and the Western States Regional Media Fellowship. Eric Marin has been teaching various courses in picture editing, sound editing and sound recording at UCLA since 1997. CHRIS MODOONO (Case Study: Indie Film and TV) Chris Modoono has to be among the tallest directors working today. ROBIN PELLECK (New Media) is vice president, digital content for TNT & TBS Original Programming where she oversees the creative development of digital extensions and custom content for all scripted drama, comedy and unscripted series for both of these Turner networks. She serves as the primary contact between both networks' series productions and TNT & TBS’ advertising sales, marketing and social media teams to create digital content for linear series. Pelleck’s career began in live news at CNN, leading to many years in network sports. She is proud of her years learning from the sports television legends at Moxie Video Productions, CBS Sports and ABC Sports. NFL, NCAA, NBA, MLB, PGA Golf, Nascar, the Super Bowl, World Series, Monday Night Football, The Final Four, U.S. Open Tennis, The Masters, Indy 500 and The NBA Finals are just a few of the hundreds of live events she has covered from network control rooms. As technology revolutionized the way television is watched, digital and streaming came next. Pelleck produced the first live webcast and interactive smartphone app from New York’s Times Square on New Year’s Eve, covered the 2012 presidential election on YouTube and The Breeders Cup Enhanced Experience live at Santa Anita. Her award-winning, vast and diverse background as a writer, director and producer also includes sports documentary, commercials, television series, studio and remote production, as well as marketing for film and television. She was the founder of order24 productions, a creative and production services company that focused on multi-platform production; integrating and extending traditional television, and creative and remote production with digital and new media. Pelleck began sharing her experiences at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television in 2013. CHRISTOPHER PEREZ (Clearance and Copyright) joined Donaldson & Callif, LLP in 2009 and became a partner in the firm in 2014. Christopher specializes in all aspects of the firm’s practice, including representing independent filmmakers through financing, production, rights clearance and distribution. Since joining the firm, Christopher has helped hundreds of productions secure the errors and omissions insurance policies necessary for distribution. Christopher has also contributed to several of the firm’s advocacy projects, including co-drafting an amicus brief on behalf of documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger in Chevron Corp. v. Berlinger in the Second Circuit; co-drafting an amicus brief of documentary filmmaker Lee Storey in Storey v. Beginning in 2009, Christopher and Michael Donaldson successfully appealed to the U.S. Copyright Office to allow documentary filmmakers to secure an exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) for extracting material from commercial DVDs for use in their documentary films under the doctrine of fair use. In 2012, Christopher and Michael were able to renew the exemption and expand access to online sources, and in 2015 they secured an even broader exemption for documentary filmmakers so they may access material from Blu-ray discs. Christopher has lectured on fair use and other production, distribution and clearance issues at UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, Cal Arts, Columbia College of Chicago and other institutions. He has also lectured for members of the International Documentary Association and Film Independent and appeared on panels at various film festivals and the Producers Guild of America. Christopher has also written several op-ed pieces for the Daily Journal, LA Lawyer and Realscreen. In 2015, Variety named Christopher one of "Hollywood's New Leaders," recognizing outstanding entertainment industry insiders in various categories. Christopher was one of eight honorees in Law & Finance. Christopher graduated from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with a BA in American Studies and a minor in Film and Video Studies, where he produced, directed and wrote several student films. After college, Christopher returned home to Los Angeles to work in marketing and membership development for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO). He studied law at the Gould School of Law at the University of Southern California. Christopher was Academic Chair of the Latino Law Students’ Association and an active member of the Public Interest Law Foundation, where he had the opportunity to participate in several legal assistance projects for the National Lawyers’ Guild, the AME Church, and Homeboy Industries in Boyle Heights. During law school, Christopher worked for California Lawyers for the Arts, Technicolor, and the Cyberlaw Clinic at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, where he worked on an array of cutting-edge entertainment, Internet, intellectual property and privacy issues. Aside from his legal work, Christopher enjoys managing and playing for his soccer team Esquire FC. He is particularly proud of the Donaldson + Callif team that won first place at the 2015 Los Angeles Film and Entertainment Soccer Tournament (LAFEST) hosted by the LA Galaxy Foundation. Christopher lives in Los Angeles with his wife Maria and his dog Bill Paxton.
BILLY RAY (Story Structure) wrote and directed SECRET IN THEIR EYES (starring Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts and Chiwetel Ejiofor), received an Oscar Nomination for writing CAPTAIN PHILLIPS (starring Tom Hanks), co-wrote the feature adaptation of the hit book THE HUNGER GAMES (starring Jennifer Lawrence, wrote SHATTERED GLASS (starring Hayden Christensen and Chloe Sevigny), and wrote/directed BREACH (starring Ryan Phillippe, Chris Cooper, and Laura Linney). He graduated from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television.
ANGELA SOSTRE (Line Producing/Low Budget Filmmaking) works as a freelance Producer/Line Producer. With her UPM Joel Henry, the two have produced commercials, music videos, as well as over twenty five feature films such as Spork, God Bless America, and Almost Kings (Netflix 2010 competition winner). Their recent projects include Behaving Badly, starring Elisabeth Shue, Dylan McDermott, and Heather Graham; Cold Turkey, starring Peter Bogdanovich, Cheryl Hines and Alicia Witt; and Camp X-Ray, starring Kristen Stewart.
ADAM SAUNDERS (Case Study: Making Your Film) is the CEO of Footprint Features. He produced and acted in Footprint’s first two feature films: About Alex (dir: Jesse Zwick, starring Aubrey Plaza, Max Greenfield and Jason Ritter) alongside Oscar winning filmmakers Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz and their Bedford Falls Company, and Family Weekend (dir: Benjamin Epps, starring Tony/Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth and Golden Globe winner Matthew Modine) also alongside Bedford Falls. The former was sold to Sony and released theatrically in 2014, and the latter was released and distributed theatrically by Paramount in 2013. As an actor Saunders received an MFA from the Yale School of Drama; as a producer, he received a certificate from the UCLA School of Film and Television, and was the co-founder and Artistic Director of the professional theater company Footprint on the Sun, upon whose foundation Footprint Features was built. Up next he is producing When We First Met, starring Adam Devine (Workaholics) alongside Oscar nominated producer Mason Novick (Juno, 500 Days of Summer) and immediately following that he is producing Shimmer Lake written and directed by Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, Men in Black 4). He holds a BA in Drama from Duke University.
MYRL SCHREIBMAN The many credits of award-winning director and producer Myrl A. Schreibman ('67, MFA '69) include the Saturn Award-winning feature films “Hunters Blood” (1987) and “The Clonus Horror” (1979) as well as independent features such as “Crime Taskforce” (aka “Liberty and Bash”) and the 1973 blaxexplotation film “Boss.” His work for television includes the award-winning movie of the week “The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything” (1980), the TV series “It Takes a Thief” and various episodic television shows. He also worked on several distinguished entertainment specials, including: “Chicago in Concert,” “Tony Bennett With Love,” “The 14th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards” and “The Celebration Continues: The Tenth Anniversary of Woodstock.” He has also produced and directed a number of projects for the Department of Defense, including a top secret effort entitled “Hostage Survival,” which was used during the first Persian Gulf War and shown to U.S. pilots before they went to Iraq. Schreibman has produced and/or directed more than 30 event stage productions and Broadway productions, including On the Waterfront and The Ice Show, and Los Angeles theater productions of The Fantastiks and The Subject was Roses. The latter won seven DramaLogue Critic Awards, including Best Director. In 2010, 2011 and 2012, Schreibman produced the weeklong UCLA TFT Film Festival, which honored such entertainment industry veterans as Lisa Cholodenko, Roger Corman, Alexander Payne, Joe Russo, Aaron Sorkin, Stacey Snyder and Harvey Weinstein. He is the author of two books, “The Indie Producers Handbook: Creative Producing From A to Z,” which has been translated into Chinese and is used at the Beijing Film Academy, and “The Film Director Prepares: A Practical Guide to Directing for Film and TV,” which was translated into Italian in 2012 and is the No. 1 directing book in Italy. Schreibman conducts international classes and workshops, including Directing the Actor and the Camera and Shooting the Story. In 2013, he conducted a class for NFL players who were examining other career options post-football. Schreibman is a contributing writer for Student Filmmaker magazine and has published journal and newspaper articles on producing and directing. His current project in development is “Coming of Age,” which takes place in 1963.
Eric W. Shamlin (Virtual Reality) is VP; Managing Director & Executive Producer at Secret Location. Eric is an Emmy and Cannes Lion award-winning storyteller with 20 years of experience across multiple creative industries; film, television, visual effects, advertising and digital. Now in virtual reality. Eric started at a regional ABC affiliate and rose quickly to cover many seminal events of the 1990s (Clinton’s re-election, the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Park bombing and the Bosnian conflict among them). In addition to news, while at ABC, Eric also produced, wrote, edited or covered hundreds of hours broadcast content including documentary, sports, variety shows and live events. While at ABC he received an Emmy, two other Emmy nominations and a list of other awards for his work. From there Eric made a jump to narrative and creative storytelling. First by working in high-end visual effects at Radium and later in digital media at world-renowned agency Goodby, Silverstein & Partners (for brands like Nintendo, HP, Adobe, Sega, Chevrolet and Rolling Rock). His experience in digital media culminated in working on the iPhone 5 launch at Apple. More recently, he has returned to his entertainment roots, bringing his digital skills, and has found renewed passion in a recently converged media landscape. Eric now makes regular speaking appearances to discuss storytelling in an industry where both traditional and digital skills are required. Eric is Vice President, Managing Director and Executive Producer of Secret Location’s US office. Secret Location is a content studio for emerging platforms. Secret Location was recently awarded with the first ever Emmy given to a VR experience. With deep digital experience and a commitment to storytelling, Secret Location has evolved into full service content development studio. Secret Location was among the first companies to pioneer storytelling in virtual reality and remains committed to delivering VR experiences at the highest possible level. They are also developing a slate of traditional serialized content, several digital platforms and look forward to the coming Augmented Reality revolution. Secret Location has offices in Los Angeles and Toronto. They are represented by UTA and VRSE.
HOWARD SUBER (Strategic Thinking) During his 52 years on the UCLA faculty, Howard Suber helped establish and also chaired the Critical Studies and Ph.D. programs, UCLA Film & Television Archive and the UCLA TFT Producers Program. He is a former UCLA TFT associate dean. He is a recipient of UCLA’s Distinguished Teaching Award as well as the prestigious 2013-2014 Dickson Emeriti Professorship Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a retired UCLA faculty member. He has also been a consultant and expert witness to all the major film studios on copyright and creative control issues, and he continues to teach the UCLA TFT courses "Film Structure" and "Strategic Thinking in the Film and Television Industries." He is the author of The Power of Film (2006) and Letters to Young Filmmakers (2012).
EVETTE VARGAS (Multiplatform Storytelling) With a repertoire spanning TV, digital, Virtual Reality and more, Evette Vargas is emblematic of Hollywood’s new breed of multiplatform storytelling talent. Described by the NY Times as an “Artist to Watch,” Evette is an award-winning writer, director, producer and co-founder of Digital-Reign, a multiplatform production company. Evette’s work includes mobile apps/games for FAST AND FURIOUS and LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy; 360 content for Madonna.com, Interscope/Geffen/A&M and Looney Tunes; series for Bravo and DirectTV. Evette EPed, wrote and directed her digital series, DARK PROPHET, starring Henry Rollins, which was in contention for two Emmys in the interactive category, premiered at Sundance and won an NBC/UNI Production Award. The Virtual Reality comic series is in the works. Evette is developing projects with Viacom/MTV and A+E Networks.
