Telluride Film Festival Partnership
In 2010, former UCLA TFT Dean Teri Schwartz embarked on the creation of FilmLAB in conjunction with Telluride Film Festival co-director Julie Huntsinger. Executive board member Frank Marshall, ’68, was the symposium's founding sponsor. FilmLAB is a multi-faceted program focused on the art and industry of filmmaking, custom-designed for 10 select TFT graduate film students who are invited to attend Telluride. They learn from the greatest filmmakers in the world in a workshop/lab setting, enjoy exclusive sessions with world-renowned writers, producers and industry leaders, and experience the festival like VIPS. In 2012, students had the opportunity to mingle with actor-director-producer Ben Affleck who shared not only his knowledge and experiences but a sneak peek preview of his satirical thriller Argo, which went on to win the Best Picture Oscar in February 2013. In 2014, they met with filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu, whose film, Birdman, starring Michael Keaton, had its North American debut at the festival. In 2016, they met with Robin Swicord, the writer-director of Wakefield, starring Bryan Cranston and Jennifer Garner; and Ben Younger, the writer-director of Bleed for This, starring Miles Teller and Aaron Eckhart. A number of alumni had films screening at the festival in 2017, including Alexander Payne (M.F.A. ’90, Downsizing), Francis Ford Coppola (M.F.A. ’67, The Cotton Club Encore), Paul Schrader (M.A. ’70, First Reformed) and Jonathan Dayton (B.A. ’80, Battle of the Sexes). In 2018 students met with director Damien Chazelle (First Man) and Peter Bogdanovich (The Other Side of the Wind), and in 2019 they met actors Renee Zellweger (Judy) and Antonio Banderas (Pain & Glory).
The strategic partnerships between UCLA TFT and Telluride continue to celebrate excellence in cinema by investing in the education of emerging humanistic storytellers through our combined leadership and resources. We encourage prospective donors and sponsors to join us in this multi-tiered program to ensure its ongoing success. We welcome corporate sponsorships, individual donations, foundation support, planned giving, and offer custom benefit packages.
