The UCLA Film & Television Archive is a public outreach unit of the School of Theater, Film and Television, justly world famous as a moving-image preservation and restoration organization that has rescued thousands of movies from the ravages of neglect, disaster and chemical decay. The exhibition program of the Archive has been hailed by critics as the most consistently impressive film exhibition effort in America. The Archive is committed to exploring and enriching the film culture of local communities. Hallmarks of that commitment include the Archive's landmark New Chinese Cinema programming, its annual Celebration of Iranian Cinema and the pioneering Outfest Legacy Project.
Now, Archive programming is accessible to a larger and more diverse audience. In one of the most momentous shifts in the organization's history, the Archive was given a new home for its exhibitions and public programs: the Billy Wilder Theater located in the heart of the Village, at the corner of Wilshire and Westwood Boulevards in the Hammer Museum.
Built with funding from Mrs. Audrey Wilder in honor of her late husband, the facilities are as exceptional as their namesake. The theater will be one of the few in the country equipped to screen an entire century of moving images in their original formats, from the earliest silent films requiring variable speed projection to the latest in digital cinema and video. The UCLA Film & Television Archive intends the new theater to serve as both a meeting place and cultural touchstone for the varied communities of Los Angeles, becoming a bridge between them.
