'Tis the Season to Apply

Information about the application process at the School of Theater Film and Television is being posted in this up-front way for a very simple reason: it is vitally important that you go through all the required steps of the process.

“This is a highly competitive program,” says Dean Dacumos, the School’s Director of Student Services. “Sadly, every year, a number of candidates fail to fully complete their applications. It is crucial that applicants go through all of the required steps of the process. Otherwise, their application to the School will not be considered.”

Undergraduate Theater (BA)

Postmark Deadlines

  • Undergraduate UC Application Period: November 1 to November 30, 2008
  • Interview/Audition sign-ups start: January 5, 2009
(If you have questions about interviews/audition, please-mail audition@tft.ucla.edu or call 310-206-4418.)
  • Supplemental Materials Deadline: January 30, 2009

Here are some common inquiries and mistakes made by applicants to the Undergraduate Theater Program:

  • If you are interested in Film, which admits at the junior level only… please DO NOT apply for Theater which does admit at the freshman level. It is impossible to change your major to Film if you are a Theater major.
  • Last year, our entering freshman class had an average GPA of 3.6 where GPAs ranged from 3.0 to 4.0 (Note: non-Residents of California need at least a 3.4 GPA to be considered.)
  • If you are interested in Theater, you must put Theater as your first choice major. Students with Theater as their alternate major will not be allowed to sign up for interviews/auditions. Their supporting materials will not be read.
  • All applicants MUST sign up for an interview/audition. Do NOT wait for us to contact you. If you apply in November and get your application ID, you must sign up for an interview/audition starting on January 5, 2009.
  • Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please make sure to submit the UC Application, all the supplemental information and sign up and attend an interview/audition session.
  • Undergraduate Theater applicants need to have at least the minimum UC requirements for freshmen or for transfers to be considered for admission.

More interview/audition answers can be found on the Audition/Interview FAQ.

You can e-mail audition@tft.ucla.edu or call 310-206-4418 if you have further questions about the interview or audition process. If you have further questions on the application, supplementary materials or admissions requirements, you can e-mail info@tft.ucla.edu.

  • Undergraduate UC Application Period: November 1 to November 30, 2008
  • Supplemental Materials deadline: January 30, 2009

Here are some common inquiries and mistakes made by applicants to the Undergraduate programs in Film:

  • We only accept Junior transfer applications for the undergraduate Film program. You cannot apply to the undergraduate film program as a Freshman. (Note: do NOT apply to the Theater degree as a Freshman if your goal is to become a Film major. Theater students will not have the required courses to change majors to Film when they are Juniors.)

  • Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. Please make sure to submit both the UC Application and all the supplemental information by the listed deadlines.

  • Do not include additional submissions such as DVDs and drawings. Simply submit the items listed under supplemental pieces site.

  • Current UCLA undergradute students only need to submit the supplemental application materials to TFT. Please do not reapply to UCLA!

For questions about the undergraduate film applications process please contact info@tft.ucla.edu.

Graduate Theater (MA, MFA, PhD)

Postmark Deadlines

Answers to some of the most frequently asked questions for Graduate Theater Applicants:

  • To expedite the process of reviewing your application, we prefer that all of your supplemental materials (statement of purpose, resume, letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) be sent collectively in one envelope to the UCLA Department of Theater.
  • The department does not allow prospective students or the general public to sit in our Theater courses at UCLA.
  • If you have a BA or equivalent degree from any accredited University, you are eligible to audition/apply to our MFA Acting program. Your degree does not need to be in Theater.
  • The GRE is only required of applicants applying to the MA and the PhD programs in Theater.

Graduate Film, Television and Digital Media (MA, MFA, PhD)

Postmark Deadlines

Answers to some of the most frequently asked questions for Graduate Film Applicants:

  • Due to the very high volume of applications, we request that students not contact us directly to find out if we have received application material. The Film Grad program does NOT utilize the online system to inform students about the arrival and completeness of their application. Once we have finished opening mail and compiling all application files, we will contact you via email if any material is missing. Generally, these missing material emails will be sent about 4-6 weeks after the application deadline. If you do not hear from us and you have a confirmation from the Graduate Division that the online application has been accepted and paid for, it is safe to assume that your application is indeed complete and will be reviewed.

GRE Requirements

  • PhD and MA applicants are required to take the GRE.
  • MFA applicants are NOT required to take the GRE (Note: the GRE is highly recommended for MA and MFA applicants with Undergraduate GPAs below 3.0.)
  • We prefer that we receive an entire application packet in full. But if recommendation letters or transcripts come separately, that is completely fine as well.
