The New LATC opens Face of The World Festival

Face of The World Festival 08 (FOTW 08) opens The New Los Angeles Theatre Center's (THE NEW LATC) 2008-2009 season. All events during the three month performance-fest take place in one of the four theatres at the THE NEW LATC, located in the Historic Core of Downtown Los Angeles. Programs focusing on contemporary universal themes include theatre, dance, music, and solo performances by local and international artists. FOTW 08 plays September 12 through December 14. For more information on THE NEW LATC and the Face of The World Festival 08 go to www.thenewlatc.com.

“Our stage will look like the city,” says Jose Luis Valenzuela, artistic director of the Latino Theatre Company and THE NEW LATC. FOTW 08 productions reflect the diversity of the multicultural landscape of Los Angeles. “It's an exciting time and we're happy to be able to reflect this new energy and vitality,” Valenzuela says.

FOTW 08 has collaborations with the University of Guadalajara (UDG), and the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, of which Valenzuela is a faculty member. UDG has a rich history, educating for more than 200 years in Guadalajara, one of Latin America's leading cultural capitals. Its FOTW 08 productions have English supertitles to provide an enhanced experience for multi-cultural Los Angeles audiences. UCLA brings The New Works Festival 2008 to FOTW 08, three original plays by UCLA students that include provocative cabaret, stage, and museum installation innovations.

Featured among the international array of FOTW 08 productions is Cada Quien Su Frida, created and performed by Mexican actor-writer-director Ofelia Medina. This theatrical work is
inspired by the love story of painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Also, featured is Dan Kwong's It's Great 2B American. This comic, multimedia storyteller embraces the Ugly American within before sending it off for compulsory deprogramming. And, Miracle in Rwanda, features Leslie Lewis Sword who transforms herself into a cast of characters to tell the true story of Immaculee Llibagiza, survivor of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

“Artistic excellence, authenticity and rich diversity are what the FOTW Festival 08 is about,” Valenzuela says. “It's hip, edgy, experimental, classic, traditional — it's L.A.”
