Professor Chon Noriega introduces 40 Hollywood films to chart the evolution of Latino images

Throughout the month of May the Turner Classic Movies film series “Race and Hollywood: Latino Images in Film” will be co-hosted by Robert Osborne and Cinema and Media Studies Professor Chon Noriega, director of the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center.

Begining on May 5 (Cinco de Mayo) films will be shown every Tuesday and Thursday night in May, at 8 p.m. (ET).

The series showcases 40 films that show the progression of depictions of Latino characters and culture. Each night's programming will center on a particular theme, such as images from the silent era, views of border towns, interracial relationships and Latino representations in past and current westerns.

Also included in the festival line-up will be several contemporary films, including “The Milagro Beanfield War” (1988), “La Bamba” (1987), “The Mambo Kings” (1992), “Stand and Deliver” (1988), “The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez” (1983) and “Lone Star” (1996).

Past editions of TCM's “Race and Hollywood” festival series have included explorations of how Hollywood has portrayed African-Americans and Asians. In 2007 TCM looked at Hollywood depictions of gays.
