Veteran screenwriter and novelist turns playwright with "Irena's Vow"

Novelist, screenwriter and television creator Dan Gordon ’69 will pass another career milestone this year when he makes his debut as a Broadway playwright with “Irena’s Vow.”

Gordon’s screenplay credits include “Passenger 57” (1992), “Wyatt Earp” (1994) and “The Hurricane” (1999). He also created and executive produced the long-running Michael Landon TV series “Highway to Heaven” (1984-1989).

“Irena’s Vow” tells the true story of Irena Gut Opdyke, a Polish Catholic, forced to work as head housekeeper for a prominent Nazi major during the German occupation, who saved the lives of twelve Jewish refugees. Four-time Tony Aawrd winning actress Tovah Feldshuh originated the role in an off-Broadway showcase last year, and will reprise her performance when the production moves to Broadway’s Walter Kerr Theatre on March 29th.

Gordon adapted the movie “Rain Man” for the stage in 2008, with productions in Isreal and London, with Josh Hartnett in the role originated by Tom Cruise. He is the author of five novels and was the founder of the Zaki Gordon Institute for Independent Filmmaking in Sedona, AZ. The Institute is named for his son, a filmmaker who died in an auto accident at the age of 22.

Gordon served as a captain in the reserves in the Israeli Defense Forces during the war in Lebanon.
