Eric Roth and Dustin Lance Black could both win Oscars in February

The matched set of Oscar nominations announced January 22, for alumni screenwriters Dustin Lance Black ’96 and Eric Roth, marked the culmination of a remarkable run in which the two scribes seemed to either win, or get nominated for, every script-writing accolade on the planet.

Roth’s work adapting the F. Scott Fitzgerald short story “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and Black’s two years of research and writing on spec to create “Milk,” a tribute to the martyred gay activist, were recognized by the Academy in their respective categories — no surprise for observers of the current award season.

Black’s original script has already been named the year’s best by the film critics of Boston, San Francisco, Dallas, Oklahoma and the Southeast, while Roth’s adaptation has been applauded by the National Board of Review, a frequent harbinger of eventual Oscar® victory. The Broadcast Film Critics named both.

The two writers have also been nominated for awards by the Orange British Academy, the Writers Guild of America and the London Film Critics Circle, while Film Independent’s Spirit Award Nominations saluted Black.

The two Bruins will be competing against several other excellent writers, but not each other, when the Oscars® are handed out on February 22.
