Director Catherine Hardwicke ’84, Editor Nancy Richardson MFA ’96 and Casting Director Victoria Thomas, who is also a TFT Alum, were in attendance at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television Annual Alumni Night on June 9, 2005. Their most recent film collaboration, “Lords of Dogtown,” was screened at the James Birgdes Theater and followed by a Q&A session and a wine & dessert reception. Attendance was high as UCLA TFT Alums gathered to hear from their fellow Alums Hardwicke, Riichardson and Thomas.

When Catherine Hardwicke made her move into direction, it was after nearly 15 years of making other directors’ pictures look good (Three Kings, Vanilla Sky). As a first-time writer/ director she threw her skill set into a new gear. Visually, Thirteen relied less on Hardwicke’s track record as a top production designer and instead leveraged a confidence in the richness coaxed from 16mm and the impact of a handheld camera .

Hardwicke’s Lords of Dogtown proves to be no less kinetic. The film tells the story of a rag-tag group of kids from dysfunctional homes that found something they were good at: skateboarding. They excelled and in the process gave birth to extreme sports, became famous, and broke apart.
