Already a Los Angeles Times “notable show” and Backstage West “Critics Pick,” UCLA Professor Mel Shapiro’s “Big Love” can now add the LA Weekly Theater awards to its accolades. The play was nominated in three categories, including Best Direction, Best Production and Best Ensemble.
The awards were selected based on productions that were in theaters of 99 seats or less that opened between January 1 and December 31, 2002. The nominees were voted in by a committee of theater critics who write for the Weekly.
Shapiro joined the staff at UCLA in 1992 after a long career directing and writing Broadway and off-Broadway plays. His work has earned him a Tony, an Obie, and two New York Drama Critics’ Awards. His professional achievements have been matched by his dedication to teaching the craft of acting, having co-founded the School of Theater at NYU and serving as the head of the drama department at Carnegie-Mellon.
“Big Love” plays through March 30 at the Pacific Resident Theater, 703 Venice Boulevard. For more info, call the box office at (310) 822-8392.
The L.A. Weekly Theater Awards will be held on Monday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. at the Los Angeles Theater Center, 514 S. Spring St., downtown, and will be hosted by Ziggurat Theater Ensemble. Nominees are free; all others, $5 at the door. For questions or to RSVP, call (323) 993-3693.
