UCLA alums are linked to 15 of the nominations announced for the 19th annual LA Stage Alliance Ovation Awards.
Hard-working acting alum Larry Cedar '76, MFA '78 will contend for an Ovation as "Featured Actor in a Musical," for his work in the Reprise Theater Company's revival of "Li'l Abner."
And two faculty members are both in the running for the "Sound Design – Large Theater" nod, Visiting Assistant Professor David Beaudry, for the Rubicon Theatre Company's "Bus Stop," and Lecturer Jonathan Burke, for the Cabrillo Music Theatre's "Singin' in the Rain" — which was also nominated in the "Musical – Large Theatre" category. Burke is Cabrillo’s Resident Sound Designer and also worked on the company’s productions of “Jekyll & Hyde” (nominated “Best Musical”) and “A Delicate Balance” (“Best Play”).
The direction of Brian Kite '91, MFA '04 drove "Driving Miss Daisy," at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, to a brace of nominations; for performers Morgan Rosler ("Featured Actor in a Play") and Lance E. Nichols ("Lead Actor in a Play"), and for the production itself, which is up for one of the evening's top accolades in the category "Play – Large Theatre."
The School's distinguished theatrical partners at The Geffen Playhouse, guided by Producing Director Professor Gil Cates and by its Production Manager, Academic Administrator Dan Ionazzi, snagged a total of eight nominations for several productions. "The Quality of Life" ("Play – Intimate Theatre") was noted both for Jane Anderson's playwriting and for her direction, along with the work of performers Laurie Metcalf, JoBeth Williams and Dennis Boutsikaris. Daniel Beaty earned the Geffen's production "Emergency" a "Solo Performance" nod, and Cricket S. Meyers roped in a "Sound Design – Large Theater" salute for "Norman's Ark."
"Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street,’ nominated in the "Touring Production" category, co-starred Broadway veteran Judy Kaye '74 as Mrs. Lovett.
Winners will be announced at the 2008 Ovation Awards Ceremony on November 17. For additional information and for tickets visit the LA Stage Alliance home page
