Six UCLA student filmmakers honored by the DGA

Current students and recent graduates are winners and Honorable Mentions in dramatic and documentary cataegories in an awards program promoting diversity in moviemaking

A record six young filmmakers currently attending the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television have been announced as prize winners and honorable mentions in the Directors Guild of America’s annual Student Film Awards for 2008, according to “The Hollywood Reporter”.

Hezekiah Lewis MFA ’08, winner in the category Best African American Student Filmmaker for “Warrior Queen.”

Second-year MFA candidate Anthony Onah, Honorable Mention, African American, for “The Cure.”

Adriana Montenegro MFA ’08, winner, Latino, for “From the Core.”

Miranda Yousef MFA ’07, winner, Women, for “Collectibles.”

Alexandra Fisher MFA ’08, Honorable Mention, Women, for “Desert Wedding.”

Second-year MFA candidate Roberto Gudiño, Honorable Mention, Latino, for "Below the Fold: The Pulitzer that Defined Latino Journalism "

“We’re honored to call attention to these exciting young filmmakers and to encourage diversity in the entertainment industry at the same time,” said DGA president Michael Apted. “We look forward to seeing more of their work in the future.”

Dramas, comedies and documentaries made in the 2007/08 school year were eligible for awards. Winners were either enrolled in or recently graduated from post-secondary accredited schools in California or DGA-selected universities around the country offering degrees in film and TV. The winners also held every major crew position in the film.

Winners will be honored at ceremonies on the East Coast and West Coast at the DGA theaters.
