Charles Burnett '69, MFA '77, writer-director of the recently restored 1977 drama “Killer of Sheep,” will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award from the 14th Annual Temecula Valley International Film & Music Festival. The award, which also will be presented this year to legendary actress Gena Rowlands, is conferred upon icons in film and music who have made significant career contributions in their fields.
Burnett made “Killer of Sheep” as his thesis film at the School in the mid-1970s, but it did not achieve wide release until 2007, when a version restored by the UCLA Film & Television Archive was distributed to great critical acclaim by Milestone Film & Video.
Burnett's other works include “My Brother’s Wedding” (1983), “To Sleep with Anger” (1990), “The Glass Shield” (1994), “Selma, Lord, Selma” (1999) and “Nat Turner: A Troublesome Property” (2003).
“Red Soil,” a political thriller that will be filmed in Africa, starring Laurence Fishburne and Kimberly Elise, is currently in pre-production.
The Temecula Festival has a long history of showcasing UCLA work and honoring its faculty and alumni. Dean Robert Rosen and Professor Howard Suber are past Lifetime Achievement honorees and the festival's current program director is UCLA Producers Program alumnus Steve Montal MFA ’93. The Festival also presents an annual showcase of UCLA student films.
“The Temecula International Film and Music Festival is proud to have a long term and successful relationship with the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television," said Montal. "For years, UCLA alums have served on the international jury of the festival. Our relationship with UCLA is a tribute to the quality of work and commitment to independent filmmaking that is the hallmark of TFT.”
The festival runs from September 17-21 in Temecula, California, headquartered at the Pechanga Resort & Casino. The festival is presented by Cinema Entertainment Alliance, a nonprofit arts and education organization dedicated to celebrating world cinema and music.
