Robert Rosen, dean of the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, will be honored by the Directors Guild of America at its Seventh DGA Honors ceremony, to be held in New York City on Thursday, October 16. Rosen will receive the Guild’s prestigious John Huston Award, conferred upon those who have made a significant contribution to artists rights. The Guild is saluting Rosen for his commitment to film preservation and his role as founding chair of the Archivists Council at The Film Foundation.
As a preservationist and historian, Rosen has occupied many positions of leadership. These include: Founding Director of the National Center for Film and Video Preservation at the American Film Institute, member of the Executive Committee of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and member of the National Film Preservation Board of the Library of Congress. Before assuming the post of dean of the School, Rosen was the Founding Director of the UCLA Film & Television Archive from 1975 to 1993 and chair of the School's Department of Film, Television and Digital Media from 1993 to 1998.
"We honor those who have made outstanding cultural contributions or fought to protect, strengthen or steer a better course for creative and economic rights in our industry," said DGA President Michael Apted.
Also to be recognized at the event are film director Milos Foreman (“Amadeus”), television creator/producer Dick Wolf (“Law & Order”), Congressman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and producer Irwin W. Young (“American Me”).
