AARP/TFT “Stolen Dreams” Competition
Anthony Onah‘s short film "The Cure" was named the winner of the Stolen Dreams competition and presented with the $7,500 grand prize.

Princess Grace Foundation
Princess Grace Awards went this year to director and performance artist Patrick Kennelly, an MFA directing candidate at the School, who received a scholarship at the Foundation’s awards gala in New York. Alumna Sheila Callaghan MFA ’97, a playwright who has been widely produced and published in the U.S. and abroad, received a Princess Grace Works in Progress Award.

Alums Louis J. Horvitz '68 and Chuck Sheetz ’83 won directing awards at this year’s Emmys, for "Outstanding Directing For a Variety, Music or Comedy Program" and “Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour), " respectively.

2008 National Society of Film Critics Award
Ross Lipman, film preservationist at the UCLA Film and Television Archive, won the The National Society of Film Critics’s 2008 Film Heritage Award :for the restoration of Charles Burnett’s Killer of Sheep and other independent films.:UCLA alumnus Charles Burnett ’68, MFA ’77, intended his 1976 thesis film for the School of Theater, Film and Television as a “neo-realist” response to the wave of violent “blaxploitation” crime films then flooding the nation’s grindhouses.

Bruins on the Simpsons team include director Mike B. Anderson MFA ’90, writer Don Payne ’87, MFA 91 and voice performers Nancy Cartwright ’81 and Harry Shearer ’64.

2008 Annie Awards
The Bruin-led team of writers, directors, animators and voice talent behind the culture-defining Simpsons TV show and feature film collected seven nominations for 2008 Annie Awards, presented by the Internatiuonal Animated Film Society (ASIFA). In addition to picking up a Best Animated Feature nomination for the summer hit The Simpsons Movie, David Silverman ’79, MFA ’83 was a nominee for Directing in an Animated Feature. The movie was also recognized for Voice Acting (Julie Kavner as Marge) and for Writing in an Animated Feature Production. The Simpsons TV show recieved writing and music nominations. Winners will be announced Friday, February 8, 2008, at a ceremony in Royce Hall on the UCLA campus.

Santa Fe Film Festival Luminaria Tribute
Professor Marina Goldovskaya, who heads the TFT documentary program, will recieve a Luminaria Tribute for lifetime achievement at the Santa Fe Film Festival, which runs from November 28-December 2. The Luminaria Tributes will be conferred during the Milagro Awards ceremony at 4 p.m. Saturday, December 1, at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe, NM. Porsche David Award
TFT graduate directing student Austin Formato is a finalist for the Porsche David Award, the top prize in the fourth annual Porsche International Student Advertising Film Competition sponsored by the auto manufacturer. The winner ewill be announced at a ceremony on Thursday, November 15, at the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg in Ludwigsberg, Germany.

Association of Moving Images Archivists Awards
Five students in their final year of the School’s Master’s Degree program in Moving Image Archive Studies MIAS have won AMIA scholarships, the most for any program in the seven-year history of the awards. The honorees are: Dino Everett (CFI Sid Solow Scholarship), James Gamble (Sony Pictures Scholarship), Oki Miyano (Rick Chace Foundation Scholarship), Stephanie Sapienza (Mary Pickford Scholarshpi), and Timothy Wilson (Image Preservation Scholarship).
