“Sideways” scribes Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor will be honored with Distinguished Achievement in Screenwriting Awards at the UCLA Screenwriters Showcase, Monday, June 13, at the Writers Guild of America West Theater in Beverly Hills. The Showcase is one of many events celebrating student talent during the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television’s Festival 2005, June 10-17.

“Sideways” won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and was nominated for four other Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. Payne and Taylor also collaborated on “Citizen Ruth,” “Election” and “About Schmidt.” Payne received his M.F.A. from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television.

Hosted by UCLA alumnus and screenwriter Mike Werb (“Face/Off”), the Showcase features staged readings from the five winners of the annual graduate student screenwriting competition. The winning scripts were selected by a panel of distinguished entertainment industry judges. The UCLA Screenwriters Showcase evening is part of UCLA Festival 2005: New Creative Work in Theater, Film and Television, June 10-17.

This year’s Showcase winners are Yule Caise (“Snake Dreaming”), Ken Gerstein (“Green Drops”), Chris Kyle (“Young Democrats”), Jenna McGrath (“Reverse Psychology”) and Karl Williams (“Superego”).

Honorable Mentions were awarded to David Garber (“5th Grade”), Susan Hurwitz-Arneson (“Comic Book Heroes”), Laurel Minter (“The Route”), Marcelo Mitnik (“The Dam”) and Danielle Wolff (“Gordon”).

All UCLA Festival 2005 events are free, but reservations are suggested as space is limited.
