Writing Sample Tips for the Application Process
For the specialties in Directing, Producing and Screenwriting, you will need to submit specific writing samples during the application process to showcase your talents. Below are the requested writing samples specific for each area and some hints on what is being requested.
- FOR DIRECTING — short film proposal (1–2 pages) will be accepted. This document will describe a short film that might be produced during your time at UCLA TFT. No adaptations or feature script treatments will be accepted. Additional information about the short film proposal can be found on the short film proposal webpage. - FOR PRODUCING – A portfolio of two treatments (3 pages each) that can be either a feature film or television treatment will be accepted. The feature film treatment may include a title, logline, genre and story synopsis. The television treatment may include a title, logline, genre, premise, short character description or major characters and a brief synopsis of pilot episode. - FOR SCREENWRITING – Samples of creative writing will be accepted, which can include screenplays, short stories, plays, poetry, etc., (no more than 200 pages). For a worksheet on the steps to apply, go to the Screenwriting Admissions page.
