Biography

Film historian Jonathan A. Kuntz did his undergraduate work in psychology at UC Berkeley before earning both a masters in psychology (‘74) and a Ph.D. in Film and Television (‘82) at UCLA. A widely respected expert on Hollywood cinema and the development of the studio system whose Critical Studies course for non-majors, “History of the American Motion Picture,” is a perennial sell out, Kuntz has written articles and conference papers on George Cukor, William Randolph Hearst’s forays into film, and many technical aspects of motion picture production and exhibition. Known for his encyclopedic knowledge he has been quoted in the media on everything from the careers of Clara Bow and Leonardo DiCaprio to the effect of controversial movies such as “Primary Colors” and “Nixon” on American politics and vice versa.
