The award-winning director Gulu Monteiro has led a theater company in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Companhia do Gesto, for 17 years. With this company they introduced to the Brazilian theatre the language of the clown, the language of masks and the gesture language. At the beginning of 2001, Gulu adapted and directed the French farce “A Flea in Her Ear” at Stages Theater Center in Hollywood. The Daily News included the play in one of the 10 Best Plays of the Year. Gulu received a 2002 Maddy Award for Best Director and a 2001 Theater LA Ovation Award for Best Adaptation. He directed the 2003 LA Times Critic’s choice “The Good Soul of Szetchuan” (Bertolt Brecht). Gulu will next stage “The Bacchae” (Euripides) at the Getty Villa in Malibu in February 2007.
