The Long Voyage Home (1940)

Directed by John Ford.

John Ford and screenwriter Dudley Nichols adapt Eugene O’Neill’s early “sea” plays to powerful effect, focusing on the crew of the fictional “SS Glencairn,” a commercial freighter transporting ammunition from the West Indies to England during Word War II. Directing a superb ensemble of seasoned character actors, Ford evokes the trials, and the bonds of friendship, that define the lives of these mostly forgotten men.
