Light’s Diamond Jubilee (ABC/CBS/Dumont/NBC, 10/24/1954)

September 23, 2014 @ 7:00 PM

$10

UCLA Film & Television Archive presents “Archive Treasures.”

Light’s Diamond Jubilee (ABC/CBS/Dumont/NBC, 10/24/1954)

Directed by King Vidor, William A. Wellman, Norman Taurog, Roy Rowland, Christian Nyby, Bud Yorkin and Alan Handley. Produced by David O. Selznick and broadcast in 1954 simultaneously on all four major networks, this astounding, seldom-seen, 75th-anniversary tribute to the electric light (sponsored by General Electric) is best understood as a time capsule of American attitudes and the voraciousness of television. Topical comedy, stentorian speeches and dramatizations of everyday American struggles and triumphs, serve to celebrate the national character as constructed by Selznick, writer Ben Hecht, and a raft of top-flight Hollywood talents.

Screenwriter: Ben Hecht, from stories and miscellaneous material by Robert Benchley, Arthur Gordon, B. Hecht, Irwin Shaw, Max Shulman, John Steinbeck. Cast: Joseph Cotten, Judith Anderson, Lauren Bacall, Helen Hayes, Brandon DeWilde.
Digital video from 16mm, b/w, approx. 120 min. IN PERSON: Daniel Selznick.

FREE Admission for all UCLA students with valid I.D.!
