Dust in the Wind
April 3, 2015 @ 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM$10
UCLA Film & Television Archive, Ministry of Culture, Republic of China (Taiwan) and Taiwan Academy, Taipei Economic and Culture Office in Los Angeles present “Also Like Life: The Films of Hou Hsiao-hsien.”
Dust in the Wind (Lien Lein fend ch’en)(Taiwan, 1986)
Directed by Hou Hsiao-shein.
The tender love between rural sweethearts Wan and Huen is sorely tested when the pair attempts to make a life in the city—an experience of alienation and disillusionment—and Wan finally faces compulsory military conscription. A universal story of lost love, the film constructs a poignant urban/rural dichotomy that informs much of director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s work, and spellbindingly posits (and then withdraws) the elusive possibility of going home again.
