SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS
(1954) Directed by Stanley Donen
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers mixes the dynamism of the musical with the frontier setting and folksy optimism of the western. Jane Powell plays the feisty new wife to Howard Keel’s gruff yet disarming mountain man, whose remote homestead is shared by his six rowdy brothers. Powell sets to work domesticating this wild bunch, and soon enough the boys are all hankering after a wife of their own. The large ensemble cast shines, especially in the elaborate set pieces choreographed by Michael Kidd, while Donen’s fluid and precise staging makes excellent use of the wide Cinemascope frame.
