A LITTLE PRINCESS
(1995) Directed by Alfonso Cuarón
Adapted from the beloved novel and play, both by Frances Hodgson Burnett, A Little Princess plumbs the imagination and resilience of Sara, a young girl with preternatural aplomb. Raised by her father in India until World War I forces him to reluctantly deposit her in the care of Miss Minchin’s School for Girls, Sara becomes an instant hit among her fellow students thanks to her amazing skill for spinning fantastical yarns. Director Alfonso Cuarón, in his first English-language film, visualizes Sara’s bravura tales in a lush style that recalls the dazzling studio artifice of classic Hollywood. Unafraid to confront darker themes as both fate and Miss Minchin’s attitude towards Sara take a harsher turn, A Little Princess is what Variety’s Todd McCarthy called “an exquisite, perfectly played serious fantasy” and “that rarest of creations, a children’s film that plays equally well to kids and adults.”
