LA CIÉNAGA
(The Swamp)
(2001, Argentina/Spain) Directed by Lucrecia Martel
Director Lucrecia Martel’s astonishing debut feature plunges the audience into the decadence and dissolution of two intertwined middle-class families in Argentina with little if any narrative cues to sort the villains from the victims amid the existential morass in which her tangle of characters find themselves. In place of simple explication, Martel unleashes an extraordinarily sensuous experience of a world in decay, both morally and physically, that will restore your faith in cinema, if not people.

Producer: Ana Aizenberg, Diego Guebel, José Maria Morales, Marta Parga, Mario Pergolini, Lita Stantic. Screenwriter: Lucrecia Martel. Cinematographer: Hugo Colace. Editor: Santiago Ricci. Cast: Mercedes Morán, Graciela Borges, Martín Adjemián, Diego Baenas, Leonora Balcarce. Presented in Spanish dialogue with English subtitles. 35mm, 103 min.

THE HOLY GIRL
(La niña santa)
(2004, Argentina/Spain/Italy/Netherlands/Switzerland) Directed by Lucrecia Martel
Director Lucrecia Martel’s follow up to La Ciénaga confirmed the arrival of a major new voice on the international cinema scene. In The Holy Girl, Martel explores the budding sexual and religious consciousness of the 14-year-old Amalia who becomes obsessed with a middle-aged doctor after he illicitly rubs up against her in the street — only to have him later turn up as a guest at her lonely mother’s hotel. Martel defies expectations for the triangle of desire that slowly takes shape, bringing a dryly comic touch to her powerful, if oblique, portrait of human vulnerability and imperfection.

Producer: Lita Stantic. Cinematographer: Félix Monti. Editor: Santiago Ricci. Cast: Mercedes Morán, Carlos Belloso, Alejandro Urdapilleta, María Alche, Julieta Zylberberg. Presented in Spanish dialogue with English subtitles. 35mm, 106 min.
