Festival of Animation Prom 2009:
The animation festival has been a tradition since 1959. Each year, a new collection of student films produced in a full range of styles is presented. Animation alumnus David Silverman will be honored at this event. Silverman has directed many episodes of the hit show “The Simpsons,” as well as the feature film based on the FOX series. The Prom takes place at UCLA’s James Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall on Saturday, June 6, at 5:30 p.m., with a repeat screening at 8:45 p.m.
Outstanding Contribution to Animation: David Silverman '79.
For almost 60 years, the UCLA Animation Workshop has promoted its "one person, one film" philosophy, allowing animators of all types to realize their concepts independently. The Workshop does not promote a particular medium (be it pencils, clay, or Maya), but offers courses in all aspects of the production of an animated film. The Walter Lantz Digital Animation Studio serves as the analog-and-digital research and production facility for thesis students.
Recent graduates have been nominated for numerous Oscar and Annie awards, the latter conferred by the International Animated Film Society (ASIFA). In 2007, Gil Kenan '02 was nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar for his directorial debut Monster House, and The Simpsons Movie, directed by this year's Festival honoree, David Silverman, collected seven Annie nominations. Current students have also been honored: Joaquin Baldwin was nominated for an Annie this year for Sebastian's Voodoo, and Emud Mokhberi was a member of the team that directed the Oscar-nominated romp Oktapodi. A landmark event for 2009 will be the release of 9, an expanded feature adaptation of the Oscar-nominated Animation Workshop thesis film by Shane Acker '04. Produced by directors Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted), 9 will be released by Universal's Focus features on (no surprise) 9/9/09.
