CABIN THE SKY
(1943) Directed by Vincente Minnelli
Vincente Minnelli made his feature directorial debut by transforming this modest Broadway show into a big-screen box-office hit. A fantasy-tinged morality tale of greed, adultery and redemption, Cabin in the Sky pits a saintly wife against Lucifer in a battle for her husband’s soul. Ethel Waters reprises her stage role as Petunia Jackson, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson plays her ne’er do well husband Little Joe, and Lena Horne shines in a memorable turn as the sultry temptress Georgia Brown. Cabin was only the fourth all-black Hollywood musical since the inception of sound, but its talented cast enabled the film to transcend prevailing racial stereotypes.
MGM. Based on the play by Lynn Root, Vernon Duke and John Latouche. Producer: Arthur Freed. Screenplay: Joseph Schrank. Cinematographer: Sidney Wagner. Editor: Harold F. Kress. Cast: Ethel Waters, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson, Lena Horne, Louis Armstrong, Rex Ingram. 35mm, B/W, 98 min.
